Think Progress: CHART: Mortgage Debt Is Holding Back The Economic Recovery

In a new report, Roosevelt Institute Senior Fellow Mike Konczal looks at several theories that attempt to explain the relationship between the weak housing market and the sluggish economy, and comes to the conclusion that mortgage debt (and not some structural factor) is one of the major factors holding back the recovery:

? The most recent empirical evidence, from academic quarters to the IMF, shows that underwater mortgage debt is creating a drag on the economic recovery. The recovery is weaker in places where mortgage debt is the highest, as more mortgage debt results in lower consumption and higher unemployment.

? Other explanations of the relationship between the housing crash and the weak economy, such as structural unemployment created by the house bubble, contain serious weaknesses.

? Debt writedowns, foreclosure mitigation, and other housing sector specific policies are a crucial tools in dealing with this ?balance-sheet recession? and gettng the economy started again.

? Foreclosures exacerbate these problems by creating vicious cycles of destructive economic activity. Some estimate that foreclosures have caused an additional 25 percent of the decline in economic activity.

As this chart shows, the areas with the largest percentage of underwater mortgages have the highest unemployment rates:

A recent study from the Amherst Securities Group found that reducing mortgage debt is the most effective strategy for preventing foreclosures. Iceland, in fact, effectively used mortgage debt forgiveness to boost its economy. A bipartisan bill introduced this month by Reps. Gary Peters (D-MI), John Campbell (R-CA), and Keith Ellison (D-MN) would mandate debt reduction on government held mortgages.

Troubling New Study On Working Pregnant Shows Why Flexible Jobs Matter

Studies Show

Women who log in more than 25 hours of work per week while pregnant increase their chances of having smaller infants, according to new research in the journal, Occupational and Environmental Medicine. That?s not even the worst part: They grow into mutant pandas overtime. We kid, of course.

But if your job requires a lot of standing?like sales and teaching do?you?re a top candidate for this puzzling, possibly detrimental phenomenon. As noted by the Daily Mail, rigorous activity could reduce blood flow to the placenta, limiting the oxygen and nutrition levels that are supposed to go to the fetus. It?s unclear why those with sedentary professions would fall victim to this, but stress could very well be a contributing factor, as it pretty much exacerbates all problems.

Women shouldn?t necessary stop working entirely or go on bed rest when expecting, but this should tell employers that pregnant staffers need more flexibility in the months leading up to their child?s birth. It?s important to minimize time on one?s feet, as one of the researchers said ?it is not known whether these very subtle changes in growth trajectory have any significance in the long term.?

Plus, why give your kid yet another excuse to resent you? A 38-year-old acquaintance of mine still berates his mother for choosing not to breastfeed him. The next generation of kids will try to pull the same nonsense with their career moms?let?s avoid the fights ahead of time by being aggressive with our bosses about pregnancy flexibility.

United Technologies acknowledges coverup of sale of military software to China

?The Justice Department will spare no effort to hold accountable those who compromise U.S. national security for the sake of profits and then lie about it to the government,? Lisa Monaco, the assistant attorney general for national security, said in a statement.

Connecticut-based United Technologies, which reported net sales of $58?billion in 2011, will pay the fine, along with Pratt & Whitney Canada and Hamilton Sundstrand Corp., as part of a settlement for lying to the government and delaying their disclosures about the illegal exports, officials said.

The charges come at a time of rising concern over the modernization of China?s military and its increasingly aggressive posture in the Asia-Pacific region.

U.S. officials have long accused China of actively spying on the American defense contractors to steal intellectual property. Officials suspect, for instance, that stolen U.S. technology helped the Chinese build a stealth fighter jet, the J-20, and modify its cruise missiles to make them harder to detect.

China?s acquisition of military technology from U.S. suppliers is prohibited under an arms embargo imposed in 1990, after the Tiananmen Square massacre.

In the case disclosed Thursday, prosecutors said Pratt & Whitney Canada sold engine-control software, made by Hamilton, to China in 2002 and 2003. Officials said Pratt & Whitney knew that China intended to use the software to develop the Z-10 attack helicopter, its first such aircraft.

The company pleaded guilty to two criminal charges, violating the Arms Export Control Act and making false statements.

?We must be very careful that the helicopter programs we are doing with the Chinese are not presented or viewed as military programs,? said one Pratt & Whitney Canada internal e-mail, according to court documents. ?As a result of these sanctions, we need to be very careful with the Z10 program. If the first flight will be a gun ship then we could have problems with the U.S. government.?

Federal prosecutors said that Pratt & Whitney did not tell United Technologies and Hamilton about the sale for years but that, once it did, the three companies tried to cover up their role.

Under the deferred prosecution agreement, an independent monitor will monitor the three companies for two years. They face criminal prosecution or additional fines if they further violate export laws.

In a statement, the head of United Technologies said the firm was ?committed to conducting business in full compliance with all export laws and regulations.?

?We accept responsibility for these past violations and we deeply regret they occurred,? said Louis Ch?nevert, the company?s chairman and chief executive.

A federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that China gained immeasurably from the sale.

?By obtaining these materials illegally from the United States, China can save itself considerable time and expense needed to develop advanced military technology on its own,? the official said.

Connecticut U.S. Attorney David B. Fein said that Pratt & Whitney Canada was hoping to parlay its military sale into huge profits from China?s civilian helicopter market.

?PWC took what it described internally as a ?calculated risk,? because it wanted to become the exclusive supplier for a civil helicopter market in China with projected revenues of up to two billion dollars,? Fein said.

Blast hits Damascus, Turkey sends troops to border

BEIRUT/ISKENDERUN, Turkey (Reuters) - Rebel forces attacked Syria's main court in central Damascus on Thursday, state television said, while Turkey deployed troops and anti-aircraft rocket launchers to the Syrian border, building pressure on President Bashar al-Assad.

A loud explosion echoed through the streets and a column of black smoke rose over Damascus, an Assad stronghold that until the last few days had seemed largely beyond the reach of rebels. State television described it as a "terrorist" blast.

Dozens of wrecked and burning cars were strewn over a car park used by lawyers and judges. The state news agency SANA said three people had been wounded by a bomb hidden in one of the cars.

The fighting coincided with a Turkish military buildup on its border with Syria and a growing sense of urgency in Western- and Arab-backed diplomatic efforts to promote the idea of a unity government to end 16 months of bloodshed.

But Assad himself dismissed the idea of any outside solution to Syria's crisis.

"We will not accept any non-Syrian, non-national model, whether it comes from big countries or friendly countries. No one knows how to solve Syria's problems as well as we do," Assad told the state television channel of Syria's ally Iran.

He said Turkey's official stance belied the Turkish people's "positive view" of Syria.

A first substantial convoy of about 30 Turkish military vehicles, including trucks loaded with anti-aircraft missile batteries dispatched from the coastal town of Iskenderun, headed towards the Syrian border 50 km (30 miles) away.

A Turkish official who declined to be named said he did not know how many troops or vehicles were being moved but they were being stationed in the Yayladagi, Altinozu and Reyhanli border areas.

A general in the rebel Free Syria Army said on Friday that Syrian government forces had amassed around 170 tanks north of the city Aleppo, near the Turkish border, but there was no independent confirmation of the report.

General Mustafa al-Sheikh, head of the Higher Military Council, an association of senior officers who defected from Assad's forces, said the tanks had assembled at the Infantry School near the village of Musalmieh northeast of the city of Aleppo, 30 kms (19 miles) from the Turkish border.

"The tanks are now at the Infantry School. They're either preparing to move to the border to counter the Turkish deployment or attack the rebellious (Syrian) towns and villages in and around the border zone north of Aleppo," Sheikh told Reuters by telephone from the border.

Last Friday Syria shot down a Turkish warplane over the Mediterranean. Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan responded by ordering his troops to treat any Syrian military element approaching the border as a military target.

This could cover Syrian forces pursuing rebels towards the border, or patrolling helicopters or warplanes. Syria said at the weekend that it had killed several "terrorists" infiltrating from Turkey.

TURKISH CONVOYS

A Reuters reporter near the town of Antakya saw the Turkish convoy moving out of the hills and through small towns on a narrow highway escorted by police.

Another convoy left a base at Gaziantep and headed for Kilis province, the site of a large camp for Syrian refugees. Video from the DHA agency showed the group of about 12 trucks and transporters filing through the gates of the base.

David Hartwell, Middle East analyst at IHS Jane's, called the Turkish action a pragmatic response to the downing of the Turkish aircraft, which Syria says was flying low and fast in Syrian airspace. "Damascus has been warned once. I doubt there will be a second warning."

Turkey, in the front line of Western efforts to press Assad to step down, hosts 33,000 Syrian refugees near its southern border as well as units of the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA).

Members of the FSA, talking close to the border, told Reuters they did not believe the Turkish deployments were on a large scale or aimed at any crossborder intervention.

"The Turks know that any large-scale military action would need international support," said a senior FSA commander who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Turkey has in the past spoken of opening a humanitarian corridor on Syrian soil if the refugee flow grew unmanageable or if the violence and killing became intolerable.

Wary of igniting a regional sectarian war, it insists this would be possible only with U.N. backing. Western- and Arab-backed efforts to forge a joint diplomatic approach with Russia have so far failed.

Thursday's attack in Damascus follows weeks of growing FSA pressure. Rebels stormed a pro-Assad television channel on Wednesday, and have also targeted police and security barracks.

Syria denies there has been a mass popular uprising against Assad and says that the rebels who have now largely taken over from months of unarmed anti-government protests are foreign-backed Islamist terrorists, including members of al Qaeda.

Assad told Iranian television that his government had a duty to eliminate these to protect its people, and that Washington was content for al Qaeda to attack countries it did not like.

"When you eliminate a terrorist, it's possible that you are saving the lives of tens, hundreds, or even thousands," he said.

NEW ANNAN PLAN

Diplomats at the United Nations say international mediator Kofi Annan will seek backing from the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and key Middle East players on Saturday for a plan for a political transition in Syria.

They say the proposal does not stipulate that Assad must step down but does call for a unity government that would exclude figures who jeopardize stability - a condition that many not be enough to convince opposition groups to participate.

"The proposal is still murky to us but I can tell you that if it does not clearly state that Assad must step down, it will be unacceptable to us," said Samir Nashar, an executive member of the international Syrian National Council.

Rebel fighters said there was no part of the plan they could accept, and that they had lost patience with Annan's efforts.

"This is just a new labyrinth. It is new silliness for us to get lost in, and haggle over who can participate and who can't," said Ahmed, an FSA fighter in Homs, epicenter of the revolt against four decades of Assad family rule in which more than 10,000 people have been killed, by a U.N. count.

An FSA member in Damascus added: "The FSA is doing its work, and it is not looking to the outside world. We don't want a transitional government unless it is the one formed by rebel military councils. The world is conspiring against the Syrian revolution."

The Importance of Nursing Care

If you are an American, then you are probably quite familiar with the nursing case management program we have in the States. Nursing is an incredibly important dynamic in the medical field, these men and women provide case care on an individual basis and accomplish the tasks that most doctors just do not have the time to do. If you are interested in apply for a nursing job, you should definitely consider applying to a technical college that can give you the skills and technical capabilities that you will need in facing this type of work on a day to day basis. Without nurses to be able to do this work we would not be able to have most of this work done, Doctors would be overworked to extremes and that only adds more and more stress to an already strained health care system. I hope that more people become nurses!

WOODLAND PARK, Colo. (AP) ? A stubborn and towering wildfire jumped firefighters' perimeter lines in the hills overlooking Colorado Springs, forcing frantic mandatory evacuation notices for more than 9,000 residents, destroying an unknown number of homes and partially closing the grounds of the sprawling U.S. Air Force Academy.

Heavy smoke and ash billowed from the mountain foothills west of the city. Bright yellow and orange flames flared in the night, often signaling another home lost to the Waldo Canyon Fire, the No. 1 priority for the nation's firefighters.

Interstate 25, which runs through Colorado Springs, was briefly closed to southbound traffic Tuesday. All told, officials said, evacuation orders affected as many as 32,000 residents.

"It was like looking at the worst movie set you could imagine," Gov. John Hickenlooper said after flying over the 9-square-mile fire late Tuesday. "It's almost surreal. You look at that, and it's like nothing I've seen before."

With flames cresting a ridge high above its breathtaking, 28-square-mile campus, the Air Force Academy told more than 2,100 residents to evacuate 600 households. There was no immediate word on whether a new class of 1,045 cadets would report as scheduled on Thursday.

A curtain of flame and smoke teetered above the academy's Falcon Stadium; billowing gray clouds formed a backdrop to its aluminum, glass and steel Cadet Chapel, an icon of the academy. Elsewhere, police officers directing traffic and fleeing residents covered their faces with T-shirts and bandanas to breathe through the smoke.

Colorado Springs Fire Chief Richard Brown insisted that "many, many homes" were saved by firefighters. And Hickenlooper, who spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano Tuesday, told anxious residents that "We have all the support of the U.S. government. We have all the support of the state of Colorado. And we want everybody here to know that."

Throughout the interior West, firefighters have toiled for days in searing, record-setting heat against fires fueled by prolonged drought. Most, if not all, of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana were under red flag warnings, meaning extreme fire danger.

In central Utah, authorities found one woman dead Tuesday when they returned to an evacuated area, marking the first casualty in a blaze that consumed at least two dozen homes. Sanpete County sheriff's officials said they hadn't identified the victim, whose remains were found during a damage assessment of the 60-square-mile Wood Hollow Fire near Indianola.

The nation is experiencing "a super-heated spike on top of a decades-long warming trend," said Derek Arndt, head of climate monitoring at the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.

The Waldo Canyon fire, which started Saturday, was 5 percent contained before 65-mph wind gusts sent it surging toward Colorado Springs. The cause was under investigation.

To the north in Boulder County, officials evacuated 26 households when a wildfire erupted Tuesday afternoon following a lightning storm. No structures were immediately threatened, but the National Center for Atmospheric Research, perched on a hilltop in front of Boulder's famous Flatirons foothills, closed as a precaution.

And in northern Colorado, the 136-square-mile High Park Fire has destroyed 257 homes and killed one woman, authorities said. That fire was triggered by lightning June 9.

Hickenlooper insisted Colorado was open to tourism, saying Colorado's fires had affected just about a half-percent of all of the state's public lands and perhaps 400 of its 10,000 campground sites.

In Utah, officials said the Wood Hollow Fire was 15 percent contained. High winds forced authorities to shut down part of U.S. 89 near Indianola, and evacuations were called for Fairview, a town of about 1,100 residents.

Elsewhere in the West:

? A fire that charred nearly 70 square miles west of Ruidoso, N.M., was 90 percent contained, with many residents allowed to return home.

? A wildfire north of Helena, Mont., destroyed four homes and forced additional evacuations. Gov. Brian Schweitzer issued a state of emergency for four counties.

? A wildfire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest grew from about 300 acres to 2,000 acres Tuesday, marking the first major wildfire of the season in western Wyoming.

Mich. Campgrounds, Retailers See Resurgence | RV Business

A slowing economy, predictions of a temperate summer and long-term gas price concerns are prodding consumers in Michigan to look toward their tents, pop-ups and recreational vehicles to get away from it all for a lower-cost family vacation.

As reported by the Detroit News, advance reservations at state campgrounds are up 23% over last year, the second straight year of increases after a long decline, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. State parks are on track this year to break 1 million camp nights, a level the state has not experienced since 2005, state officials said.

Campgrounds and retailers specializing in camping gear say they had a booming Memorial Day, the traditional start of the camping season. That bodes well for the summer months, travel forecasters said.

?In surveys, RV owners say gas prices would have to hit $8 (a gallon) before they would consider skipping their outdoor vacations,? said William G. Sheffer, director of the Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds (MARVAC), a trade association in Okemos.

Singles, families and baby boomers are targets for an industry hungry for a comeback. Stores, trade groups and others are investing in emotional marketing campaigns, such as REI?s sponsorship in the ?Great American Backyard Campout? effort. Its website promoting today?s event extols, ?Remember that magic moment when you put up that tent all by yourself??

Stores including Summit Sports, a small chain with two stores in Metro Detroit that began selling camping gear this year, also are promoting high-tech, lightweight gadgets options. One is Coleman?s LED Quad Lantern, a bright single unit that separates into four separate lanterns for those late-night bathroom treks.

There is an emphasis on easy-to-use gear and in-store instruction, said Fidel Carino, manager at Summit Sports in Brighton.

?We?re not going to send you out there without knowing how to use the equipment,? Carino said.

Public and private campgrounds also are adding amenities such as Wi-Fi, knowing the difficulty some people have going offline.

Some are offering comfortable rental RVs, cushy and untraditional camping entertainment options. Besides singing songs and roasting marshmallows, for example, campers can check out the new zip line, outdoor bowling and sand lagoon at the Flint/Holly KOA campground.

These amenities are needed to hook first-time campers and convince former campers to try it again, said Mike Ebach, a Gander Mountain store manager in Traverse City and a partner in the state?s First Time Camper program, which loans camping gear for $20.

?So many people switched from a $150-per-night hotel room to a $25-per-night campground,? Ebach said. ?Now those people who camped last year and had such a great time are now trying to recruit their friends.?

Musical robot companion enhances listener experience

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? Wedding DJs everywhere should be worried about job security now that a new robot is on the scene.

Shimi, a musical companion developed by Georgia Tech's Center for Music Technology, recommends songs, dances to the beat and keeps the music pumping based on listener feedback. The smartphone-enabled, one-foot-tall robot is billed as an interactive "musical buddy."

"Shimi is designed to change the way that people enjoy and think about their music," said Professor Gil Weinberg, director of Georgia Tech's Center for Music Technology and the robot's creator. He will unveil the robot at the June 27th Google I/O conference in San Francisco. A band of three Shimi robots will strut its stuff for guests, dancing in sync to music created in the lab and composed according to its movements.

Shimi is essentially a docking station with a "brain" powered by an Android phone. Once docked, the robot gains the sensing and musical generation capabilities of the user's mobile device. In other words, if there's an "app for that," Shimi is ready.

For instance, by using the phone's camera and face-detecting software, the bot can follow a listener around the room and position its "ears," or speakers, for optimal sound. Another recognition feature is based on rhythm and tempo. If the user taps or claps a beat, Shimi analyzes it, scans the phone's musical library and immediately plays the song that best matches the suggestion. Once the music starts, Shimi dances to the rhythm.

"Many people think that robots are limited by their programming instructions," said Music Technology Ph.D. candidate Mason Bretan. "Shimi shows us that robots can be creative and interactive."

Future apps in the works will allow the user to shake their head in disagreement or wave a hand in the air to alert Shimi to skip to the next song or increase/decrease the volume. The robot will also have the capability to recommend new music based on the user's song choices and provide feedback on the music play list.

Weinberg hopes other developers will be inspired to create more apps to expand Shimi's creative and interactive capabilities, allowing the machine to leave the lab and head into the real world.

"I believe that our center is ahead of a revolution that will see more robots in homes, bypassing some of the fears some people have about machines doing everyday functions in their lives," Weinberg said.

Weinberg is in the process of commercializing Shimi through an exclusive licensing agreement with Georgia Tech. A new start-up company, Tovbot, has been formed and Weinberg hopes to make the robot available to consumers by the 2013 holiday season. Shimi was developed in collaboration with the Media Innovation Lab at IDC Herzliya and led by Professor Guy Hoffmann. Entrepreneur Ian Campbell and robot designer Roberto Aimi were also part of the Shimi team.

This is the third robotic musician created by the Center for Music Technology. Haile is a percussionist that can listen to live players, analyze their music in real-time and improvise with music of its own. Shimon is an interactive marimba player.

"If robots are going to arrive in homes, we think that they will be these kind of machines -- small, entertaining and fun," Weinberg said. "They will enhance your life and pave the way for more sophisticated service robots in our lives."

(AP) ? Drew Davis wanted to play football at North Carolina for his father, Butch Davis. He'll get the chance to accomplish at least part of that goal.

Drew has enrolled in summer school as a walk-on quarterback for new Tar Heels coach Larry Fedora, who took over in Chapel Hill after the school fired Butch Davis amid an NCAA investigation of improper benefits and academic misconduct.

In an interview with The Associated Press, the former coach said he and his wife, Tammy, supported their son's decision despite the turmoil and hurt that followed his abrupt firing just before training camp last summer.

"I think he was concerned about how we'd feel," Tammy Davis said. "But we just kept reiterating that it was his decision."

"He wanted us all to be OK with it," Butch Davis added.

The coaching change threw Drew's once-set college plan into question just before his record-setting senior season at nearby East Chapel Hill. But UNC team spokesman Kevin Best confirmed Drew started classes here Thursday.

The school generally doesn't allow freshmen to talk to reporters until after their first game or public scrimmage.

Butch Davis, who wasn't cited for an NCAA violation in the probe, is currently a consultant to head coach Greg Schiano with the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He said he met Fedora in the spring and also reached out to offensive coordinator Blake Anderson about the possibility of Drew joining Fedora's program.

"We're parents," he said. "As much as anything else, you want what's best for your child. This is what he wishes to do and we're going to support him."

Fedora said Monday the coaches reviewed Drew's game tape and evaluated him the same way they would for anyone else seeking to join the program.

"We'll get him in the program, develop him and see where that goes from there," Fedora said. "I look forward to it. Really for us, we've got 10 or 12 walk-ons coming into the program. He's just one of the guys and he'll be treated the same way."

After missing the last half of his junior season with a shoulder injury, Drew threw for 3,525 yards and 30 touchdowns in 11 games under Bill Renner. Renner is the father of starting UNC quarterback Bryn Renner, who is also close friends with Drew.

Drew put up big passing numbers in an offense with no running back and five receivers on every play. He set a state record with 43 completions in a September loss to Carrboro, completed 42 in a loss to Southern Durham in October and finished second in state history with 323 completions on the year.

He also threw for 488 yards ? eighth in state history ? and five touchdowns in a win against Durham Jordan in September.

Last fall, Fox Sports/Scout.com listed Drew as a three-star prospect, though he was behind in recruiting because many schools figured he'd play for his father at UNC and were already deeply involved in their own commitments or targets. He had originally planned to graduate in December and enroll at UNC for the spring semester.

The plan for Drew to play for his father at UNC even led to a secondary NCAA rule violation by chancellor Holden Thorp, who said a week after the firing that he was disappointed Butch Davis offered his son a scholarship without consulting Thorp or then-athletic director Dick Baddour. NCAA rules prohibit discussing recruits who haven't signed a letter of intent.

The Davises said Drew wouldn't have been on scholarship at UNC under his father.

Butch Davis said Drew made an unofficial visit to his former program at Miami, but he had long wanted to attend North Carolina. That never changed even though Drew will face extra scrutiny as the son of the former coach regardless of whether he plays a snap.

"He's a good kid," Butch Davis said. "He's levelheaded. He's pretty mature. He didn't make this decision blindly."

Apple iPhone 5 to Put Samsung Galaxy S3 to "Shame", Says Foxconn CEO

With the whole tech world still reeling under the Samsung effect since the launch of its Galaxy S3 in Indian markets late May, rival Apple may possibly take a bigger bite of success with its upcoming iPhone 5, as claimed by a high-profile executive.

According to Terry Gou, CEO of electronic manufacturer Foxconn, Samsung's third generation smartphone will be left in dust following the launch of the much-awaited iPhone 5. Gou added that consumers should hold off purchasing the Galaxy S3, with the iPhone 5 expected to put Samsung's latest to "shame", a Focus Taiwan report said.

Obviously on Apple's side, the Taiwanese tycoon claimed that Samsung has "a track record of snitching on its competitors". ?

Often touted as the iPhone killer, Samsung's Glaxy S3 has already had tech enthusiasts enrapt with its futuristic and state of the art features that might not possibly require any further enhancements. However, reeling with ambition, Apple is expected to unveil a bigger launch for its iPhone 5 by adding far better features in n attempt to override Samsung 's success in the smartphone arena. ?

Meanwhile, the sixth generation iPhone, which is rumored to debut sometime in October this year, may arrive with a spate of high-end features including a 4-inch screen, a Liquidmetal body case, plus a mini connector.

Analysts are also anticipating that Apple will integrate several improvements in the highly anticipated device. According to a CNET report, Shaw Wu, tech analyst of Sterne Agee, predicts the iPhone 5 will sport "a new form factor, a slightly larger screen, and 4G LTE support built into Apple's next flagship phone."

Wu also added that Apple may close a deal with telecommunication company China Mobile for offering the iPhone on the operator's TD-SCDMA 3G network for its for 650 million subscribers in China.?

Sony patent filing for glasses would share data face to face, carry more than a hint of Project Glass

Sony patent filing for glasses would scan realworld tags, carry more than a hint of Project Glass

Google might not realize it, but Project Glass isn't alone in the patent race these days. Sony has quietly applied for a patent on a familiar-looking smart glasses system whose advantage over Mountain View would be an emphasis on things in twos. Eyepieces are the most obvious, but Sony is also keen on sharing data between two friends: transmitters on a pair of glasses would send personal info through a likely very uncomfortable glance at someone else with the same eyewear. If your friends are more than a little weirded out from sharing by staring, the proposed glasses could still pick up information from visual tags on posters, products and virtually anything else. There's even the obligatory connection to a watch for sharing data with the rest of the world. Whether or not the patent leads to Sony head-mounted technology more advanced than a personal 3D TV is still up in the air, especially with Google currently hogging the spotlight... not that existing, more conservative designs have ever stopped Sony from rolling out wild concepts before.
