Job Summary

The Communications and Events Manager for the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts is an integral part of the Bemis Center?s Marketing team. Primary responsibilities include the development and distribution of publicity, marketing materials and managing internal and external events. This position will work directly with the Media Director and the Director of Operations to ensure the ongoing viability and promotion of the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Communications

  • Develop clear, concise copy and content for press releases, website updates, print materials and social media networks ensuring consistent messaging across all platforms
  • Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with key online, print and broadcast media representatives
  • Identify and solicit media opportunities for special events, exhibition openings, individual artists and staff members
  • Promote organization at events and in media interviews
  • Distribute news releases and media alerts and follow-up with phone and email communications
  • Arrange interviews with print, television and radio media representatives.
  • Maintain photo and video image files to facilitate print and digital media requests. Track all print and digital media for archival purposes

    A pinch of opportunity makes deep inequality more palatable

    ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? Just a tiny hint of opportunity has a disproportionately powerful effect -- making unfairness more acceptable to disadvantaged people, new research has found.

    A study by Eugenio Proto, an economist from the Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy (CAGE) at the University of Warwick and two other co-authors, looked at decision-making and how it was influenced by people's perceptions of fairness.

    Researchers set up a game between two people where one person (the proposer) offers to split ?10 between themselves and their partner, with the proposer able to decide the exact amount he or she is willing to offer.

    If that amount is not accepted by to the second person (the responder) then neither gets any money.

    Known as an ultimatum game, this kind of set-up is frequently studied by economists -- but for the first time the CAGE experiment introduced an element of inequality via an increasingly-biased rigged lottery to decide who becomes the proposer, the stronger of the two positions.

    It makes sense that when people see clear-cut unfairness, they are less likely to accept it -- and this was shown in the results.

    When the opportunity to become the proposer was 50 per cent -- i.e completely fair -- responders on average rejected an offer by the proposer of ?2.15 or less.

    And when the chance of becoming the proposer was rigged at 0 per cent -- i.e complete inequality -- responders rejected offers of ?2.96 or less.

    But when just a one per cent chance of becoming a proposer was introduced -- i.e the lottery was still vastly rigged biased in the proposer's favour -- responders rejected offers of ?2.53 or less.

    In other words the difference between having absolutely no chance and having just a one per cent chance was valued at 43p (?2.96 -- ?2.53) -- proportionally much larger than the 38p value (?2.53 -- ?2.15) given to the gap between 1 and 50 per cent.

    Dr Eugenio Proto, Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick, said he was surprised to discover this quirk in human decision-making.

    "When you look at it rationally, it makes no sense that people are placing such a disproportionate value on that first one per cent increase in opportunity.

    "But that slight increase in fairness seems to have some kind of symbolic meaning.

    "It appears people are happy to accept extreme inequality when they have this tiny carrot dangled in front of them.

    "We've got to remember that our experiments are conducted in a lab at a university, not in the real world which is far more complex.

    "It seems that even if people believe they have just the tiniest of chances to become the next Bill Gates, it's enough to keep them tolerant of obvious inequality."

    Anirban Kar of the Delhi School of Economics, one of the other two co-authors, added: "It makes sense that when people see clear-cut unfairness in the system, they are more likely to reject an unequal outcome than if the same outcome was generated by a fair system.

    "Participation in the system, surprisingly enough, even a symbolic one (a modicum of voice) seems to have a significant impact."

    Drone-maker Parrot invests $7.5 million in two EPFL spin-offs, sets sights beyond toys

    Switzerland's EPFL has managed to catch our attention with its various UAV-related activities, and it looks like it's also been the radar of Parrot, maker of the AR.Drones. EPFL announced today that the French company is investing 7.4 million Swiss Francs (or about $7.5 million) in two companies that have been spun out of the institution: senseFly and Pix4D. As you may recall, those two have collaborated in the past, with senseFly providing the camera-equipped UAVs necessary for Pix4D's 3D mapping software. Broken down, the investment works out to 2.4 million Francs put into Pix4D and five million invested in senseFly, the latter of which is enough for Parrot to claim a majority stake company. As for the future, senseFly's CEO says that the deal will give Parrot "access to the expertise and the technology for specialized drones," while Pix4D's CEO says that the investment "reinforces our position as a leader in software for professional drones" and opens up new business opportunities. It also makes it clear, if it wasn't already, that Parrot is getting pretty serious about drones.     "Big Rich Georgia" to explore Buckhead Country Club

    NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Style announced the "Big Rich Texas" spinoff "Big Rich Georgia," which will focus on life at Georgia's exclusive Buckhead Country Club.

    The original series will return for its third season in October, when "Giuliana & Bill" and "Tia & Tamera" will also return, Style said.

    New series "Betsey + Lulu," meanwhile, about designer Betsey Johnson and her daughter and muse, will premiere early next year. "Big Rich Georgia" will also premiere then. The network said it would feature "outrageously wealthy mothers and daughters whatever it takes to stay on top of the social scene and in control of the action."

    The network also announced plans to air The Style Awards to kick off New York Fashion Week.

    The network made the announcements at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. It also said it will begin airing "Gossip Girl" reruns on Wednesday nights, beginning August 15.

    In December 2011, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott (?Abbott?) sued the Texas Highway Patrol Association (?THPA?), the Texas Highway Patrol Museum, THPA Services, Inc. and several senior THPA officials (collectively ?THPA and Affiliates,? separately ?Affiliates?).? The suit claimed that THPA and Affiliates defrauded charitable donors by illegally soliciting donations under the false pretense that the contributions would be used to benefit the families of slain state troopers.? Instead, state investigators found that few survivors actually received financial assistance from THPA and Affiliates, and the money went toward personal use such as meals, movie theater and amusement park tickets and unauthorized association credit card charges for travel for officials and their family and friends.?

    THPA and Affiliates received up to $10,000.00 a day and they could not produce receipts for their expenditures that evidenced business related transactions.? While the organization had raised approximately $12,000,000.00 in donations within five (5) years, only a reported $63,500.00 was given to the families of fallen state police officers.?

    Some THPA officials gave employees excessive compensation and used donations to pay for personal vehicles.? Although THPA officials told investigators that the cars were for business, the insurance policy listed the purpose of the vehicles as being for pleasure.?

    The lawsuit also charged THPA and Affiliates with falsely claiming that they were a tax-exempt, charitable organization registered with the Internal Revenue Service (?IRS?).? THPA was a nonprofit business league, not a charity.

    THPA and Affiliates also face civil penalties under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act for falsely claiming that they are associated with the Texas Department of Public Safety (?DPS?) and its highway patrol division.? Neither the THPA nor its Affiliates are associated with the DPS.

    The Travis County Probate Judge Guy Herman appointed a temporary receiver and froze THPA?s assets at $490,000.00.? The total amount of money improperly used was not acknowledged in the suit because Abbott plans to make that a part of the ongoing investigation.? The suit has not yet been adjudicated.

    Day one of competition brought some controversy when the North Korean women's soccer team refused to come out of their locker room for more than an hour before their match in Glasgow Wednesday.

    Apparently someone on the stadium staff attached a graphic of the South Korean flag to the North Korean team's player photos during introductions prior to their game against Colombia.

    ?We?re sorry for the delay. We have problems backstage,? was the announcement from the stadium staff as the stall wore on. The match was supposed to begin at 7:45 p.m. local time, but didn't begin until 8:50 p.m. Organizers apologized for the mistake.

    North Korea won the match 2-0 and will play France at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday in Glasgow.

    Twenty years ago a similar controversy arose when track cyclist Erika Salum?e sprinted to gold in 1988 under the Soviet flag and won again as an Estonian in 1992. It was the first Olympic medal won for a country that had broken from the Union, but during the medal ceremony her flag was displayed upside down. Salum?e was bothered "a little bit," but ultimately unfazed.

    "It did not matter," she told the London Independent at the time. "It was just unbelievable that I had the gold."

    Aleppo fighting reaches 5th day in Syria

    BEIRUT (AP) ? Opposition activists say fighting raged through the night in many neighborhoods of Aleppo, bringing the conflict in Syria's largest city into its fifth day.

    Syria's commercial hub is about 40 miles (60 kilometers) from neighboring Turkey, which announced Wednesday it was closing its 566-mile (911-kilometer) border with its neighbor to trucks due to the unrest.

    Syria's ragtag rebel army, which has little central organization, has seized at least two crossings into Turkey. Dozens of Turkish trucks were looted and captured by armed men last week at the Bab al-Hawa crossing.

    The move cuts off an important import route for supplies for the Syrian state.

    Fierce fighting spread through several neighborhoods of Aleppo on Tuesday, with government forces fighting rebels with helicopters and tanks.

    New Chronic Pain Management Group ? Vinland Center

    As part of Vinland?s outpatient mental health clinic (Rule 29 clinic), Vinland is now offering a chronic pain management group to address co-occurring mental health and chronic pain issues among our residential chemical health clients.

    ?Many of our clients have injuries resulting in chronic pain,? said Duane Reynolds, Vinland?s associate director. ?We developed this group so that our clients can work on their pain issues while in chemical dependency treatment, where they can learn coping skills to manage their pain without the use of narcotics.?

    According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), research shows well-established associations among chronic pain, substance abuse, and mental disorders.

    The chronic pain management group is led by Dr. Ralph McKinney, a psychologist with more than 30 years of working with individuals with chronic pain, and Jeff Willert, a certified exercise physiologist with more than 20 years of working with individuals with chronic pain.

    Living with Chronic Pain

    In contrast to acute pain, which subsides in time, chronic pain sufferers deal with pain for extended periods ? for months, years, or even a lifetime. This contrast to our usual thoughts about pain ? it hurts, but eventually it will stop ? often provokes confusion and distress, emotional symptoms that exacerbate the physical pain.

    Persistent pain can have significant adverse effects on health. Chronic pain can trigger emotional responses, including sleeplessness, irritability, anger, anxiety and depression, which in turn leads to more pain.

    A New Normal

    Perhaps most difficult for people is leaving behind the lives they knew and accepting the new reality of living with chronic pain.

    ?Many people feel like they should have no pain and they won?t be happy until all of the pain is gone, but that is not the reality of their situation,? Reynolds said. ?They need to accept that chronic pain is a part of their life, and learn coping skills so that they can live with and manage the pain.?

    Group Goals

    The goal of the group is to develop long-term strategies for pain management through health maintenance and a balanced lifestyle, and to resolve the emotional and psychological consequences of coping with chronic pain.

    ?We teach clients how to deal with daily pain,? said Jeff Willert, Vinland?s fitness and wellness manager. ?We are showing them how to focus on something besides the pain.?

    The five-week curriculum explores the meaning that pain has for the clients, and teaches them alternative methods for dealing with their pain. Clients learn about meditation and breathing exercises, how diet and exercise play an important role in managing chronic pain, and the connection between mental health and chronic pain.

    Clients are asked to keep a journal to record their daily pain levels, reactions to their pain, and what situations helped or intensified their pain. This process helps clients develop an understanding of their pain and how to control it by avoiding certain stressors.

    Dr. McKinney tries to reframe the clients? minds around their pain. Instead of asking ?Are you in pain today??, he asks ?How much is the pain bothering you today?? This acknowledges that the pain is there, but that it can impact the client in different ways.

    London Olympics mascots: menacing or magic?

    LONDON (AP) ? Sinister. Disturbing. Creepy. Frightening.

    The official mascots of London's Olympic and Paralympic Games ? Wenlock and Mandeville ? have been called all of those things, but organizers are hoping to tack on a more positive title: merchandising magic.

    The futuristic-looking pair have popped up all over London, casting their one-eyed gaze at tourists and locals alike from posters, statues and a slew of Olympic merchandise ranging from key chains to cutlery.

    Bloggers and other commentators, however, have been skewering the duo for scaring children and projecting a creepy surveillance-state image of the Olympic games.

    Wenlock ? named after an English town in Shropshire that helped inspire the modern Olympic games ? and Mandeville, whose name pays tribute to the hospital considered the birthplace of the Paralympic Games ? look more like surveillance robots than humans or animals.

    In place of a face, each have one large, staring eye ? a camera, according to Olympic organizers, to let them "record everything."

    They have legs, but no feet; arms bearing "friendship bands" in the colors of the Olympic rings, but no fingers. Both of their heads have "taxi light" in the middle, a tribute to London's famous black cabs.

    Wenlock's head is round, while Mandeville has ridges atop his noggin. They peer out of official London Olympics snow globes, adorn backpacks and towels, decorate magnets and mugs.

    Olympic mascots over the years have raised the question: What were they thinking? (Turin's humanized snowball and ice cube in 2006, anyone?) But even Sydney's spiky echidna managed to look cute and cuddly, while a barrage of critics say Wenlock and Mandeville are anything but.

    "It's not so friendly," said Jenny Zhang, looking at a Wenlock while in London from China for business. "We don't see a smiling face, it's not a friendly eye. It's just watching you."

    Since they were selected as the official mascots back in 2009, detractors have had a field day with the pair, questioning how faceless monsters fashioned out of "drops of steel" ? the duo's creation story ? won out over 100 other designs by artists and agencies.

    Their watchful eyes ?described in many forums as toy versions of London's omnipresent CCTV lenses ? seem to have caused the most discomfort, drawing Orwellian comparisons and references to surveillance states. Wenlock figurines in police gear have come under fire from dozens of online commenters decrying the "fascist playthings" and "totalitarian toys."

    Actor Ewan McGregor tweeted his disappointment Friday after seeing plastic mascot statutes in London's Regents Park: "With this country's artistic heritage this one eyed joke made me sad."

    Despite the vocal backlash, mascots are proving to be an important part of the London 2012 product range, according to the city's Olympic organizing committee. It said in an email that soft toys of Wenlock and Mandeville were a "consistent best seller."

    Organizers would not provide a breakdown of sales so far, but said Wenlock and Mandeville items make up around 20 percent of the total London 2012 licensed merchandise, which is expected to generate more than 1 billion pounds ($1.6 billion) worth of sales.

    Despite the ever-present mockery, visitors to the mascots' official website have created more than 105,500 personalized avatars, and mascot statues in London seem to be inspiring more curiosity than criticism.

    On a recent afternoon, some tourists gawked at the life-size statues while others hung off them for photos.

    Six-year-old Nimaran Sandhu's face lit up when she saw a Wenlock statue.

    "It hasn't got a face and I think it's funny," she told a reporter, adding with a giggle that Wenlock looked "fat."

    Alessia Goldthorpe, 5, rattled off facts about Wenlock and Mandeville to her father in the same park before declaring that she likes Wenlock.

    "He's happy!" she exclaimed.

    Reports: Workers told to underplay Fukushima radiation

    A subcontractor urged workers at Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant to put lead around radiation detection devices in order to stay under a safety threshold for exposure, according to reports.?

    An executive in his mid-50s told the workers in December to attach the lead plates to the alarm pocket dosimeters?that plant owner Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO)?had given them with to monitor exposure,?sources close to the matter said, according to a report by Kyodo News?on Saturday.?


    Dosimeters can be worn as badges or carried as devices around the size of a smart phone to detect radiation.?

    Protesting as Japan regains nuclear power

    Nine workers wore the lead plates around the devices once after the executive's request,?public broadcaster NHK said, citing the subcontractor's president.?

    Japan's disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in March 2011 contaminated the land around it so badly that the area was effectively a write-off. Today the radiation-infected area is known by a name Ray Bradbury would like: "the exclusion zone." NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel reports from inside the zone, part of his report for Rock Center with Brian Williams airing Wednesday, Mar. 7, at 10pm/9c on NBC.

    Japan's health ministry said on Sunday it would investigate the reports, Reuters reported.?

    Report: Golden's staff broke recruiting rules

    CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) ? Miami coach Al Golden's second season at the school is beginning much like his first one, with new accusations of rule breaking, the looming threat of serious NCAA sanctions and no apparent end in sight for the long probe into the Hurricanes' compliance practices.

    Citing unidentified sources, Yahoo Sports reported Friday that former Miami football employee Sean Allen ? who has been linked to one-time booster and now convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro through the improper-benefits scandal that broke last year ? assisted members of Golden's coaching staff with recruiting.

    If true, that could be a major NCAA violation by the troubled program, despite Golden's repeated insistence that he wants to "get it fixed."

    "The inferences and suggestions in the Yahoo Sports story that my conduct was anything but ethical are simply false," Golden said in a statement released Friday night.

    Golden also said that he has been a college football coach for more than 18 years and stands by his record of compliance.

    "I, like all of us at UM, have cooperated fully with the joint NCAA-UM inquiry and will continue to do so, so that our program and our university can move forward," Golden said.

    Earlier Friday, two people with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that NCAA investigators visited Miami for several days earlier this month, just the latest round of the lengthy inquiry into the Hurricanes' athletic department. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because information about the probe has not been publicly released. Shapiro's claims that he provided dozens of Miami athletes and recruits with extra benefits over an eight-year span were published by Yahoo Sports last August.

    Golden is scheduled to discuss the coming season at the Atlantic Coast Conference media days in North Carolina early next week.

    A significant portion of Shapiro's allegations from last year revolved around Allen, who was an assistant football equipment manager until leaving the program last year. Shapiro said he gave Allen more than $200,000, most allegedly spent on players and recruits, as well as a luxury car. Allen denied those claims to Yahoo Sports in 2011, and has not responded to interview requests from the AP.

    Shapiro's attorney, Maria Elena Perez, did not respond to requests for comment Friday. She deposed Allen late last year, shortly before court records showed Miami entered into an agreement with a bankruptcy trustee to return $83,000 it said it received "directly and indirectly" from Shapiro.

    Miami has been bracing for additional allegations, and was aware earlier this week that they were coming. In an e-mail obtained by the AP, university President Donna Shalala told trustees Thursday that "someone who had a low level position at one time" was expected to allege that Miami assistant coach and former NFL player Micheal Barrow committed recruiting violations. Shalala said it has already been investigated.

    Yahoo Sports reported Friday that Allen tried to aid both Barrow and former assistant Aubrey Hill, who left the Hurricanes less than a month after Golden was hired and is now the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida. It cited Allen's phone records, detailing calls he made to recruits ? often moments before or after calling Barrow or Hill. It also listed other alleged violations, such as Allen giving recruits rides to the Miami football offices or to restaurants for meetings with coaches.

    Some current players were listed as having contact with Allen during their recruiting process, including standout defensive lineman Anthony Chickillo, cornerback Thomas Finnie and incoming freshmen Randy "Duke" Johnson and Herb Waters.

    Chickillo, according to the new Yahoo Sports report, was taken to a strip club on his recruiting visit, and that the trip for him and former Miami defensive end Olivier Vernon was arranged by Allen. Vernon decided after last season to skip his final season with the Hurricanes and make himself eligible for the NFL draft. Vernon was one of the players sanctioned by the NCAA last season for accepting money from Shapiro.

    It's unknown when the joint NCAA-university investigation will end, said the people who spoke to the AP on Friday. When the probe is over, Miami would first receive a notice of allegations, then have the chance to appear before the NCAA's infractions committee.

    Typically, when investigators visit a campus, they are either conducting interviews with athletic department personnel, reviewing documents, or both. The NCAA generally does not provide status updates during their investigations, and university officials only have said they are continuing to cooperate with the terms of the inquiry.

    Earlier this week, safety Ray-Ray Armstrong was dismissed for undisclosed rules violations. Armstrong was suspended for four games last year after acknowledging he took money from Shapiro and then missed another game while the school checked to see if he broke other rules after he interacted with a person who works with professional athletes.

    Miami is also dealing with the sudden departure of former director of football operations Tom Deahn.

    So nearly a year after the Hurricanes became wrapped up in an extra-benefits scandal ? and with training camp fast approaching, along with ACC media days starting this weekend ? Miami still has plenty of questions and very few answers.

    "Who doesn't want a clean slate? We get a fresh opportunity to do something new," running back Mike James said earlier this summer when asked if the Hurricanes were eager to put the troubles of 2011 behind them. "Hey, I'm happy to see last year go. It's gone. Let it go."

    Miami could still face heavy sanctions from the NCAA over the scandal sparked by the allegations Shapiro in last year's Yahoo Sports story. Eight Miami players missed at least one game as part of sanctions the NCAA imposed over Shapiro's claims, and four others had to make small restitution payments.

    It was the first blow in an academic year filled with compliance-related issues.

    Men's basketball was hit multiple times, first with the suspension of DeQuan Jones after he was linked to Shapiro ? Jones was ultimately allowed to return to the team ? and then suspensions of two other players. Reggie Johnson missed a game after the joint compliance investigation showed members of his family accepted "impermissible travel benefits" from a member of the school's former coaching staff. And guard Durand Scott, the Hurricanes' leading scorer, was suspended just before Miami's ACC tournament game with Florida State after he was also found to have gotten unspecified extra benefits.

    Even Miami's nationally ranked women's basketball team had problems, with star guard Riquna Williams suspended for violating team ? not NCAA ? rules just before the Hurricanes went to the NCAA tournament. Without Williams, Miami was ousted in the second round.

    But those matters pale to the ongoing inquiry into football, Miami's centerpiece program with five national championships since 1983. And it's long been clear that the uncertainty ? what rules were broken and how tough will the penalties be ? will linger into this coming season, just as it overshadowed every step of the 2011 campaign.

    "You've just got to go forward and put the past in the past," Miami quarterback Stephen Morris said earlier this offseason. "Last year was rough for everybody, for every sport here. I'm sure everybody is just excited to move on."
