Miami Dolphins talking points: Coaching search leaves everyone in football office in limbo ? including Jeff Ireland

A trio of Dolphins talking points as we dig for more news on the coaching search:

1. Coaching search leaving everyone in Dolphins? football office in limbo ? all the way to the top.

When the regular season ended in St. Louis, Tampa Bay and Jacksonville and their head coaches were fired, the assistant coaches quickly learned their fate, too. The decision-makers for all three teams quickly and decisively fired all of the assistants shortly after dismissing the head coaches (except for Jacksonville interim coach Mel Tucker).

The coaches in Miami, however, don?t have that luxury. They?re currently stuck in limbo because their owner hasn?t decided on a head coach, and hasn?t decided how many assistant coaches, if any, will return next year.

Since they haven?t been told anything, the coaches must sit and wait and watch TV for updates like the rest of us. But that?s not all too uncommon ? the assistant coaches in Kansas City are going through the same thing.

What is uncommon, though, is that the Dolphins? general manager also doesn?t quite know his fate. Jeff Ireland should be back with the Dolphins in 2012, as Steve Ross promised in a news conference four weeks ago, but nothing right now is certain.

According to a report yesterday by NFL Network?s Jason LaCanfora, former Chiefs president and long-time Ross confidant Carl Peterson is spearheading the effort to recruit Jeff Fisher to Miami. Peterson was on the helicopter with Fisher yesterday and spent four hours pitching the job to him, although Ross and Ireland were involved with the process.

And according to the report, if the Dolphins land Fisher, then ?not only could Peterson take a team president position, but Ireland?s status might end up in doubt, with Peterson considering bringing several of his former personnel people with him to Miami from Kansas City.?

But if Fisher doesn?t come on board, and the Dolphins hire one of Ireland?s candidates, then ?there?s little chance Peterson has a role with the team.?

So Peterson will be involved with the Dolphins this offseason ? or he won?t. Ireland will be the general manager ? or he won?t.

Not many people in the building ? including Ross ? seem to know those answers right now.

2. All?s quiet on the coaching search.

A few early names emerged in the Dolphins? coaching search on Monday, the first day of the search ? Todd Bowles, Fisher and Dave Toub.

Where will the Dolphins go after interviewing those three? That?s anyone?s guess, as the Dolphins are being very hush-hush about their list of candidates.

That?s not the case in Jacksonville, where the list of the Jaguars? candidates made its way to the Florida Times-Union ? Mike Mularkey, Bill O?Brien, Mike McCoy, Rob Chudzinski and Brian Schottenheimer.

Same with the Bucs? list of candidates, which according to the Tampa Bay Times includes Mike Sherman, Jerry Gray, Fisher and Mularkey.

But the Dolphins under Ireland have put a premium on privacy, and so far they?re doing a good job of keeping their coaching wish list a secret. After Bowles, Fisher and Toub, no one in the local or national media has gotten word about who will be interviewing next. And don?t expect many real leaks about the coaching search until the process is nearly complete.

3. Steve Ross is learning.

When Ross flew to California last January to interview Jim Harbaugh, he was shocked at the level of intensity in which the media covered the event, particularly the live tracking of his private plane on the internet.

?I felt like Santa Claus being tracked,? he joked a couple months later.

The way Ross is conducting his search this year makes it look like he learned his lesson.

Ross? private plane returned back north to the New York area on Monday. Usually, wherever the plane goes, Ross goes with it. Except this week.

The Dolphins don?t appear to be using Ross? plane to bring candidates down here. Instead, Fisher and other candidates are flying to South Florida and being transported to the Dolphins? training facility in Ross? private helicopter, which can?t be tracked on the internet.

Of course, it won?t stop reporters from snooping around and trying to figure out who this team is interviewing. But it?s a sign that Ross is getting serious about his privacy.
