Mexico Court Upholds Presidential Vote

Mexico's highest electoral court, late Thursday, rejected a legal bid to overturn Enrique Pena Nieto's victory in the July 1 presidential election, paving the way for the centrist to begin his six-year term in December.

Pena Nieto and his Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, were accused by runner-up Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of laundering money and buying votes to secure a victory, but the judges said there was insufficient evidence of wrongdoing.

Lopez Obrador, a leftist former mayor of Mexico City, said the PRI bought 5 million votes with illegal funding and supplied voters with presents such as supermarket gift cards, fertilizer, cement and even farm animals.

But Justice Flavio Galvan dismissed evidence submitted by the leftist coalition regarding purported abuses by Pena Nieto's campaign as "vague, generic and imprecise."

The unanimous ruling by the seven-member Federal Electoral Tribunal will return the PRI to power after it lost the presidency for the first time in 71 years in the 2000 elections. The PRI had governed Mexico with an authoritarian hand, but Pena Nieto has promised to break with his party's nefarious past.

Outside the courthouse, about 200 demonstrators shouted their disapproval when the decision was announced.

The protests tapped into memories of the PRI's long rule in Mexico, which lasted between 1929 and 2000 and was frequently dogged by allegations of corruption and vote-rigging.

Pena Nieto won the election with 38.2 percent of the vote compared to 31.6 percent for his challenger, who lost by 3.3 million ballots. He rejected the claims of Lopez Obrador, who also unsuccessfully challenged 2006 election results. He lost that year by less than 1 percentage point.

Lopez Obrador, backed by the Progressive Movement coalition, accused the PRI of returning to its old ways in order to secure Pena Nieto's victory in the election.
The PRI has denied wrongdoing.

Iran leader rules out nuclear bomb, will pursue energy

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran has no interest in nuclear weapons but will keep pursuing peaceful nuclear energy, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told heads of state from developing countries in Tehran.

Iran, hosting a summit of the 120-nation Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), is hoping the high-profile event will prove that Western efforts to isolate it and punish it economically for its disputed nuclear programme have failed.

"Our motto is nuclear energy for all and nuclear weapons for none," Khamenei told the assembled heads of state.

But discord over Syria swiftly marred the summit when Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi urged member states to support Syrians striving to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, whose staunchest regional ally is Iran.

"Our solidarity with the struggle of the Syrian people against an oppressive regime that has lost its legitimacy is an ethical duty as it is a political and strategic necessity," Mursi said, prompting a walkout by the Syrian delegation, according to the pan-Arab satellite channel Al Jazeera.

It was not immediately clear if the Syrians had returned to the meeting after Mursi's speech.

Mursi's visit to Tehran was the first by an Egyptian leader since Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979, but his uncompromising speech suggested there would be no swift reconciliation between the two countries after three decades of animosity.

Diplomatic relations between Cairo and Tehran broke down immediately after Iran's revolution over Egypt's support for the overthrown Shah and over its peace agreement with Israel.

The NAM summit's final declaration is set to express deep concern about the violence in Syria and support for efforts by U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to broker a resolution to the conflict, a delegate at the meeting told Reuters.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, attending the Tehran summit, urged Khamenei late on Wednesday to take concrete steps to prove Iran's nuclear work is peaceful.

The West suspects Iran is seeking a nuclear weapons capability, an accusation Tehran denies.

In his speech, Khamenei criticized the U.N. Security Council as an illogical, unjust and defunct relic of the past used by the United States "to impose its bullying manner on the world".

"They (Americans) talk of human rights when what they mean is Western interests. They talk of democracy when what they have is military intervention in other countries," he added.

Read James Holmes? rejected grad school application letter

James Holmes' booking photo (Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office)

James Holmes, the former Univ. of Colorado graduate student accused of killing 12 people during last month's theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., had applied to the Univ. of Iowa's neuroscience program in 2011, but was rejected.

"Do NOT offer admission under any circumstances," Dan Tranel, neurology professor and director of psychology at the Univ. of Iowa, wrote in an email to the admissions committee published Thursday by the Denver Post.

The Jan. 30, 2011, email included Tranel's recommendations for seven applicants, including Holmes. Other candidates for the program were characterized by Tranel as "stellar," "solid," "solid, not spectacular" and "probably fine." Tranel advised the committee to offer admission to four, saying he was not sure about two others. Holmes, though, he was sure about.

Holmes applied to several other schools, including the Univ. of Illinois--which accepted him. But he chose to attend the Univ. of Colorado Denver.

[Complete coverage: Colorado theater shooting]

According to his application, Holmes--a graduate of the Univ. of California-Riverside--wanted to pursue a degree in neuroscience because of his "foremost passions, the science of learning, cognition and memory."

"I have always been fascinated by the complexities of a long lost thought seemingly arising out of nowhere into a stream of awareness," Holmes wrote in his application letter. "I have an unquenchable curiosity, a strong desire to know and explore the unknown, and a need to persist against the odds."

Holmes--who gave himself the title of "aspiring scientist"--also recounted his childhood in California and his experience as a camp counselor for underprivileged children:

Behind the cluster of houses, rows upon rows of strawberries grew in the Salinas valley. As a child I passed these strawberry fields everyday on my way to school into the town of Castroville, "The Artichoke Center of The World". At school everyone wore a mandatory uniform consisting of navy blue jeans for the boys and a navy blue skirt for the girls, while everyone donned a white shirt. I didn't know at the time why uniforms were necessary but later discovered the uniforms were issued to curb gang rivalry. Looking back, my life could have gone in a completely different direction had I not possessed the foresight to choose the path of knowledge. I chose to appreciate an education, cultivating my mind. Since then I have strived to find new and better ways to learn, to improve. This is why I aim to attend graduate school and why my primary aim is to explore learning and memory.

In the field of cognitive neuroscience, researchers come from many different backgrounds and bring part of who they are to their investigations. I too will bring my past, specifically my strong moral upbringing. In addition, I will also exemplify my resolution and clairvoyance in problem solving. These abilities and more are typified in a summer job I performed as a camp counselor for underprivileged children.

Assuming a leadership role was something I was previously unaccustomed to but I took on the task with fervor. For the next week, twelve boys ages ten to eleven would look up to me for guidance and direction in Cheyenne cabin. Following them, nine more weeks with nine more groups. Every day there were activities for the kids but one of the activities "create your own," tended to turn into chaos. At first I chose to let the kids decide what they wanted to do and put it to a vote. Democracy right? Bad idea. Some wanted to go to the game room, others wanted to rest, some wanted to go to the field but there was no way to manage everyone if they split up. The outcome resulted in twelve kids arguing with each other, name calling and pushing. To resolve these types of incidents from occurring again I changed my strategy. "Create your own" became game room on Monday, sports on Tuesday, drawing on Wednesday... and if the kids were really good I devised something special for them like lizard catching. In the middle of that week when the campers were writing letters to home about their camp experience one of the little guys asked me how to spell amazing.

When it was time for each cabin to go home there were always kids telling me they wanted the same cabin next summer and if I would be back again to be their cabin counselor. At those moments I felt a sense of unparalleled accomplishment.

Other times I felt that I could be doing more. On average, two of the kids per cabin were clinically diagnosed with ADHD. One of the weeks, I mentored a kid with Schizophrenia. At 3:30 a.m. he woke up and vacuumed the ceiling of our cabin. These kids were heavily medicated, but this did not solve their problems, only create new ones. The medication changed them from highly energetic creative kids to lax beings who slept through the activities. I wanted to help them but couldn't. This is where neuroscience research becomes invaluable.

With a neuroscience doctorate there is even more to accomplish. Those most in need of an education including children and people with cognitive disabilities, can benefit from the results of research into the workings of learning, memory and brain-behavior relations. Indeed all aspects of society have the potential to gain from advancements in our understanding of learning and memory because we are all connected. We all share one brain, the human brain.

Holmes is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 58 others during the July 20 massacre at a midnight screening of "A Dark Knight Rises"--several weeks after failing an oral exam at University of Colorado Denver. According to the Arapahoe County District Attorney's office, Holmes was barred from the school's Anschutz Medical Campus after he made threats in June.

Prosecutors also say Holmes told a classmate in March that he wanted to kill people.

Holmes' defense attorneys say he is mentally ill.

Protein found to regulate red blood cell size and number

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? The adult human circulatory system contains between 20 and 30 trillion red blood cells (RBCs), the precise size and number of which can vary from person to person. Some people may have fewer, but larger RBCs, while others may have a larger number of smaller RBCs. Although these differences in size and number may seem inconsequential, they raise an important question: Just what controls these characteristics of RBCs?

This question is particularly relevant for the roughly one-quarter of the population that suffers from anemia, which is often caused by flawed RBC production. A better understanding of how RBC production is controlled may offer greater insight into the development and potential treatment of anemia.

By analyzing the results of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in conjunction with experiments on mouse and human red blood cells, researchers in the lab of Whitehead Institute Founding Member Harvey Lodish have identified the protein cyclin D3 as regulating the number of cell divisions RBC progenitors undergo, which ultimately affects the resulting size and quantity of RBCs. Their findings are reported in the September 14 issue of Genes and Development.

"This is one of the rare cases where we can explain a normal human-to-human variation," says Lodish, who is also a professor of biology and bioengineering at MIT. "In a sense, it's a window on human evolution. Why this should have happened, we have no idea, but it does."

Lodish likens cyclin D3's role in RBCs to that of a clock. In some people, the clock triggers RBC progenitors to mature after four rounds of cell division, resulting in fewer but larger RBCs. In others it goes off after five cell division cycles, which leads to production of a greater number of smaller RBCs. In both cases, the blood usually has the same ability to carry oxygen to distant tissues.

The initial hint of cyclin D3's importance came from GWAS, genetic surveys of large numbers of people with or without a particular trait. Researchers compare the groups in an attempt to identify genetic variations.

"The problem with most GWAS is that you get a bunch of potentially interesting genes, but that doesn't tell you anything about the functional biology, so you really have to figure it out," says Leif Ludwig, a Lodish graduate student and co-author of the Genes and Development paper. "You only know something has a role, but you don't know how it can cause variation. This work on cyclin D3 is a really nice example of how functional follow-up on a GWAS association can really teach us something about underlying biology."

In the case of RBC size and number, a mutation affecting cyclin D3 production bubbled to the surface from the GWAS's murky genetic data. Ludwig and co-author Vijay Sankaran then confirmed that reduced or inhibited cyclin D3 expression in mice and in human RBC progenitors caused those cells to halt cell division and mature earlier, producing larger and fewer red blood cells than mice and cells with uninhibited cyclin D3 production.

As one of only a handful of studies that have successfully used GWAS to produce definitive biological results, Sankaran is excited that this work confirms the value of such genetic studies.

"Can genetics teach us about biology?" asks Sankaran, also a postdoctoral researcher in the Lodish lab. "Yes! This work tells us that as genetic studies identify new genes, there will probably have been a lot of things biologists may have ignored. Genetics allows you to shine a spotlight on something interesting and then home in on it see what can be learned."

This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds, and Amgen, Inc.

For Your Eyes Only: Swedish Bond gala criticized

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Were the martinis shaken, not stirred? Nobody knows, but a James Bond-themed party thrown by Sweden's security service sure didn't adhere to this one-liner from "Casino Royale:" ''I will be keeping my eye on our government's money."

Sweden's prime minister has urged the heads of government agencies to control their spending on staff parties after the SAPO security service admitted it held a Bond bash for 4.3 million kronor ($650,000).

The Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported that SAPO threw the party for its 1,000 employees in June 2011, featuring roulette tables, a tuxedo-clad orchestra playing Bond film music, and song, dance and comedy performances by Swedish artists.

The report, following a string of articles about spending binges at government agencies, exposed SAPO to both ridicule and criticism.

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt told the paper Wednesday that agency chiefs "are well paid, they should know better."

SAPO said the party capped a day of educational and inspirational activities mean to provide "knowledge, inspiration and solidarity" after a year of organizational changes and a heavy work load.

"In this case, the agency set aside a large amount of money so that our roughly 1,000 employees stationed across Sweden could gather, something that is necessary for us to carry out our mission," SAPO chief Anders Thornberg said in a statement.

Critics said the event was particularly ill-timed since SAPO has been undergoing a reorganization involving budget cuts.

At Home: Lush Patio Space in German Village ...

Scott Elder and Chad Huguenin enjoying their outdoor patio.

Remember the feeling you get when you walk into a place and just know it is for you? That happened to partners Chad Huguenin and Scott Elder when they were shown a place in German Village. They had looked at a lot of homes, many in the Short North and German Village because they wanted a home in an urban area. The house in German Village didn?t have much greenery in the front garden and the rooms in the front of the house had mismatched flooring. But once they went through the kitchen and turned to the right?

?As soon as we rounded the corner and saw the patio, we thought, oh yeah, this is the place,? says Elder.

The enclosed dining room has two large picture windows that look out onto the patio. Even though the previous owners did not have many plants on the patio, Elder and Huguenin have green thumbs and knew it was perfect. They ended up making an offer on the 1400 square foot home, with 3 bedrooms and 2 and a half baths and it was theirs. That was just over four years ago.

They would like to redo the cabinets and countertops in the kitchen.

A chalkboard for menu planning and grocery lists.

Into the dining room.

These tree boxes held the seating cards for their wedding at Taylor Mansion. Elder went to EcoFlora for advice and plants to make the terrariums.

As soon as they bought the house, they had the floors redone to match the wood floors in the living room. Having cohesive flooring throughout the home makes it feel larger. The master bedroom and bath are on the main living level. They repainted the walls to a dark blue-gray and added airy curtains that still allow you the views of the side garden and street and also the patio. It?s peaceful and calming, the perfect place to relax.

Unique doors lead into the master bedroom.

Soft and serene colors in the master bedroom.

The German Village Society does a great job welcoming new members. Elder and Huguenin joined and were given a packet of information on their home. It was built in 1870. It was also on the House und Garten tour in 1969. Pictures of a dinner party in the home show that there may be a mural of South Fourth street behind the mirrored wall.

?But we probably won?t take it [the mirror] off to see,? says Huguenin.

The couple also had the son of a previous owner contact them about a painting of the home that his mother had. The painting had been commissioned in 1969 and he asked Elder and Huguenin if they would like it. They did, bought it, and have it hanging in the living room.

?It?s fun to see the changes the house has had,? says Elder. Huguenin agrees. ?It is a part of this house and will stay with the house,? he says.

Built in shelving in the living room. Elder and Huguenin decided to keep the eagle painted in the transom.

Painted exposed brick in the living room.

The foyer displays a painting done by Huguenin's grandmother, Irene Blake. Blake created many paintings during her time at Ohio University, something the family did not discover until after her death. There were enough that everyone was able to choose a painting to remember her by. On the right, a closeup of the home in 1969, and the couple's version of a wedding guest book, displayed in the dining room.

For furnishings, they often find things at West Elm and Crate and Barrel. They also like to look in consignment shops, but don?t often find just what they are looking for. It took them a long time to find the perfect dining room table for the space. They wanted a table made of reclaimed wood, and Elder was considering making one himself, when they came across one at West Elm. It was in such demand that it took four months to be made, but it was worth the wait. The large dining space and bench for seating, as well as the soft gray chairs and accent pillows are so right in the space.

The dining room and patio are absolutely their favorite rooms of the home. The two love to entertain guests and often have friends over. The dining room has a functional wood burning fireplace that is cozy in the winter months.

Large picture windows in the dining room bring the outdoors in.

The wall where they added a trellis and hanging flower baskets.

The planter boxes atop the wall hold peppers and other vegetables.

In the patio, they added fountains and planters, stones from Lang Stone Company, a trellis and flower baskets. In the planters on top of the walls, they have some peppers and a few other plants. They plan to let the peppers dry so they can make their own crushed red pepper flakes. There is also a Serviceberry tree that produces enough berries for jam making.

?We have jam sessions,? says Huguenin. Elder also enjoys buying large quantities of fruits and preserving them. He and another family member recently canned a large amount of peaches into jam. He feels it?s a rewarding way to spend time, and the beautiful (and tasty!) jars make wonderful gifts.

The house does not have an abundance of storage, so they added shelving along the walls leading to the basement. Elder and Huguenin would like to redo the kitchen and the bathrooms. This summer, they are getting the exterior of the house repainted.

Artwork and photos showcase their love for Columbus and each other. The small door leads to the basement.

German Village ended up being the perfect place for them to set up their home. They both have lived in Columbus for quite awhile and have enjoyed seeing all of the changes taking place- most recently, the addition of Columbus Commons and Bicentennial Park. Those are parks that Elder and Huguenin can easily walk to, and sometimes hear the concerts from. In the village, they enjoy spending time on the patio at MoJoe Lounge, eating at Harvest Pizzeria, and getting take out from Club 185.

?It?s so easy to live here,? says Elder.

Paul Ryan Makes It Rain Money on Mitt Romney

ABC's Emily Friedman and Zach Wolf report:

An upside for Mitt Romney in selecting Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate is that he ignites a real excitement among budget-minded conservatives.

That excitement was clear Saturday when, according to Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul, the campaign raised $1.2 million in just the four hours after announcing Ryan as running mate.

Romney has eclipsed President Obama in fundraising in the months since clinching the GOP nomination, although Obama, who has been raising money for his entire presidency, still has more cash on hand.

Afghan officials: 3 US special ops troops killed

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at?7:43 a.m. ET: KABUL, Afghanistan --?A man wearing an Afghan army uniform shot and killed three U.S. service members, the U.S. military command said Friday. Afghan officials said the victims were American special?operations?forces troops.

Reuters reported that an Afghan police commander opened fire on the service members after inviting them to a meeting to discuss security. A U.S. military official confirmed the three deaths and said another service member had been injured during the incident.

NBC News' Jim Miklaszewski reported that a "lone gunman" remained on the loose and was being hunted. U.S. military officials said the victims were part of a "special operations village stability mission."

Citing Afghan officials, Reuters said the American special operations?forces members were killed late Thursday while attending a meeting in the Sarwan Qala area, in what appeared to be a planned attack by rogue Afghan forces.

"The commander was Afghan National Police in charge of local police in Sangin," a senior Afghan official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. Sangin is a district of Helmand province.

"It looks like he had drawn up a plan to kill them previously," the official added.

A military official told NBC News' Courtney Kube that it was unclear whether the gunman was a member of the Afghan security forces or whether he was just wearing a uniform.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi told The Associated Press by telephone that the attacker, whom he identified as a member of Helmand police named Asadullah, had been helping U.S. forces train Afghan local police troops. However, the Taliban has made false claims about the details of attacks in the past.

The attack is the third killing this week of coalition soldiers by Afghans who are training to take over responsibility for security once most international forces leave in 2014.

So-called "green on blue" shootings, in which Afghan police or soldiers turn their guns on their Western mentors, have seriously eroded trust between the allies.

Ahmad Jamshid / AP

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.

According to NATO, there have been 24 such attacks on foreign troops since January in which 28 people have been killed. Last year, there were 21 attacks in which 35 people were killed.

Senior Army leader slain
Earlier, the Pentagon confirmed that?three U.S. service members -- including a senior Army leader -- and an American aid worker were killed Wednesday by a suicide bomber in Kunar province.

The victims included Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin J. Griffin, the most senior enlisted soldier for the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.?Griffin, 45, of Riverton, Wyo., was a Bronze Star recipient who first enlisted in the Army in 1988.

Maj. Thomas E. Kennedy, 35, of West Point, N.Y., and Air Force Maj. Walter D. Gray, 38, of Conyers, Ga.,?were also killed.?USAID foreign service officer Ragaei Abdelfattah was identified as the other victim.

On Tuesday, two gunmen wearing Afghan army uniforms killed a U.S. soldier and wounded two others in Paktia province in the east.

And on Thursday, two Afghan soldiers tried to gun down a group of NATO troops outside a military base in eastern Afghanistan. No international forces were killed, but one of the attackers was killed as NATO forces shot back.

NBC News' Courtney Kube, Jim Miklaszewski and Atia Abawi, The?Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

WI Humane Society joins lawsuit against using dogs in wolf hunt - WITI

Wolf hunt

Wolf hunt

MILWAUKEE ? The Wisconsin Humane Society has joined other plaintiffs in filing a lawsuit against the Wisconsin DNR and Natural Resources Board to stop the use of dogs for wolf hunting.

Other plaintiffs in the case include outdoorsmen, hunters, volunteer trackers and other Wisconsin animal welfare organizations. The plaintiffs do not want dogs used in wolf hunting until ?reasonable rules are established to protect dogs from injury or death,? according to a statement released by the Wisconsin Humane Society.

On April 2, 2012, the Wisconsin Legislature passed a law allowing a wolf hunting season in which dogs could be used to ?track or trail? wolves.? The law left it up to the DNR and the NRB to write specific rules for a wolf hunting season.?

?Under the rules as they are now, dogs can be trained and used to hunt wolves in ways, in areas, and at times that place them in jeopardy of dangerous confrontations with wolves, certain to lead to literal fights to the death,? Angela Reed with the Wisconsin Humane Society said in a statement.

The five-month wolf hunt is scheduled to begin Oct. 15. It is the only such hunt in the nation in which hunters would be allowed to use dogs.

Family tree Paterson appeal in Skelmorlie / Largs & Millport Weekly ...

Published 8 Aug 2012 09:30 Mobiles Print Comments 0 Comments

I wonder if any reader may be able to open an avenue in my family history research. I can trace some lines back to the 1790's, but on this matter I am held up in the 1930's and 40's. My paternal line is through Reay, Dent And Mawson of Keswick, down in Cumberland. In 1893 Elizabeth Eleanor Dent married a William Paterson of Blantyre and by 1911 they were living in Skelmorlie. They had four children, one of them, John 'Jack' Paterson, in August 1929 married Margaret 'Daisy' McMillan at St Joseph's, Wemyss Bay. Jack is thought to have been a chaffeur for a Mr Edwards, a Glasgow Jeweller.

During the mid 1930's, members of my Reay family are known to have paid visits to the area, some to thought to have been at the Edwards large house. My late father, whilst serving in the Royal Navy, and moving between ships in the Clyde, is known to have visited the McMillan's at this time. I have a letter in which he refers to the house 'Mayfield', and to 'young Ian', and mentions a 'Billy' and 'Gerry' - possibly a female.

A photo shows three young lads sat astride my fathers Norton motorcycle, believed to have been taken on another occasion in the Skelmorlie or Inverkip area. I am aware of the present day house 'Mayfield' at Skelmorlie, but if anyone can tell me of the connections with my Reay or Dent relatives, or identify the budding racing cyclists, I would be pleased to hear from them.

The Many Benefits Of Personal Development | Backlinkarticles

With personal development, make sure that you do not burn your bridges. This is important because you never know who you might need to depend on further down the line. Your life is made up of the people you choose to surround yourself with, and you narrow your choices by burning bridges.

It is completely natural and healthy to express feelings of anger but you should do it when you are calm. You need to express those negative feelings if you are ever going to find a way to resolve them but doing it when you are already angry is not going to help anyone.

Always think about what you are going to say before you do so. You do not want to end up with a mouth full of toes when you put your foot in it. It is always the best way to carefully choose your words and make sure your idea is conveyed the way you would like it to be.

Learn to recognize your negative thinking patterns ? then reroute them to a more positive or realistic mindset. Do this with the help of a simple daily log, or work with a therapist to learn cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT has been proven to help people change their automtatic negative thinking into a more positive, realistic thought process.

Exercise regularly to build strength and endurance. When you have stamina, you have more energy to withstand the challenges of everyday life. This will boost your confidence, increase your mental clarity, and will help you keep going in any endeavors that you take on in self-improvement. Your overall health influences how you live.

Do not just react to whatever events are taking place in your life. Always be proactive more than reactive. Being reactive is just accepting whatever events come your way. Being proactive isn?t just taking care of those events but also creating your own events. Stay away from just being reactive and become proactive.

Personal hygiene can be a big part of improving yourself in many ways. This means going beyond the basics and actually developing some kind of skin care regimen for yourself. You will be surprised at the difference that healthy skin can make in the way that others interact with you.

Influence your moods with food. Eat more complex carbs to help curb anxiety. To increase your alertness, add more protein and foodsd rich in essential fatty acids. White fish and salmon are great foods for this. To lift your spirits, add foods like turkey, lettuce and salmon to benefit from the protein and naturally-occuring tryptophan.

The first step in personal development is recognizing and admitting that there is a gap in your life between where you are, and where you would like to be. Many people don?t do this, but it is an essential step. If you don?t recognize a problem, how can you find a solution?

If you find yourself struggling with your career and it is impacting your overall personal development, consider drawing up a list of things you see yourself doing and the happiness you feel you would gain from it. Then look to see if there are ways you can accomplish it with your current position, and even look to new ways you would be able to do so.

Step outside of your comfort zone. So many people are living sad lives because they are afraid to take a risk every now and then. Make a plan to do something you have been afraid to do; it could be skydiving or simply asking for a raise. When you take a risk and find it wasn?t as bad as you thought it would be, you feel more powerful and more likely to do even more.

Do not avoid starting a project because you feel you do not have the energy to finish. This is an insidious form of procrastination that can push your personal development goals right off the end of your schedule. Make a start on your project and tell yourself you can break off when you get too tired.

Be aware of what brings out the worst in you and alter it. Perhaps you only smoke when you are on break at work. Perhaps your next door neighbor always inspires you to procrastinate first thing in the morning by sharing gossip over the fence. You can?t eliminate the breaks or the neighbor, of course, but you can change how you respond to each.

Try drinking more water on a daily basis. Water is not only essential to your overall health, but it works wonders for your mind too. It cleans out the toxins in your body and can also help clear your mind to help you stay awake. Staying hydrated is essential to a better body and mind.

Enhance your sense of well being by starting today on the journey of personal improvement. You do not need will power, as you can see from the empowering suggestions in the article above. Take your first true steps on the way to a better you by putting this advice to work for you.

A look at recent tech-industry earnings

Several tech companies have reported their quarterly earnings, including Facebook for the first time as a public company. LinkedIn recorded strong results to counter disappointing earnings from other newly traded Internet companies ? namely Facebook and Zynga. Groupon reports next week.

Here is a summary of recent earnings and reports for selected technology companies and what they reveal about the state of spending and the overall economy:

? July 2: Microsoft Corp. says it is absorbing a $6.2 billion charge to reflect that one of the biggest deals in its 37-year history, for online ad company aQuantive, turned out to be a dud.

? July 6: Samsung Electronics Co. estimates its second-quarter operating profit at 6.5 trillion won to 6.9 trillion won ($5.7 billion to $6.1 billion), a 79 percent jump from a year earlier based on the midpoint of that range. Analysts say the sharp rise in operating profit was driven by the success of its Galaxy line of smartphones. However, Samsung's stock fell as lower-than-expected overall sales underlined the threat from Europe's economic malaise.

? July 9: Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. lowers its quarterly forecast, blaming weaker-than-expected sales in China and Europe and lackluster demand overall from consumers. AMD says it expects revenue to fall by 11 percent from the previous quarter, below its earlier forecast of a 3 percent decline.

? July 10: BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. asks disgruntled investors at a shareholders meeting for patience as it develops new devices to rival the iPhone and Android smartphones. The company reiterates a warning that the next several quarters will be challenging. It also expects to book another operating loss in the current quarter as the company cuts prices to sell its older BlackBerry models.

? July 17: Yahoo Inc. reports another lackluster quarter on CEO Marissa Mayer's first day on the job. It continues years of financial lethargy that has plagued the one-time Internet pioneer as Google and Facebook have prospered. Net income fell 4 percent from a year ago, and adjusted earnings were short of expectations.

Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, says revenue for the current quarter is likely to come in below Wall Street forecasts as it blames "a more challenging macroeconomic environment."

? July 18: IBM Corp. reports its 38th consecutive quarter of earnings increase. Net income rose 6 percent despite a 3 percent drop in revenue amid Europe's economic jitters. IBM revenue in Europe, the Middle East and Africa fell by 9 percent from last year. The turmoil in Europe hurt IBM's results as currencies there weakened, translating into fewer U.S. dollars. IBM says revenue would have been slightly higher than last year if currency-exchange rates had remained the same.

EBay Inc. more than doubled its second-quarter net income thanks to higher revenue from its PayPal online payments business and its e-commerce websites. Its marketplaces business, which includes its flagship website, saw the strongest growth rate since 2006.

? July 19: Google Inc. says its second-quarter earnings rose 11 percent despite a deepening decline in the prices paid for its Internet search advertising. The results included Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of cellphone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for the first time. Revenue climbed 35 percent from last year to $12.2 billion. If not for Motorola, revenue would have increased by 21 percent.

Microsoft Corp. says a $6.2 billion accounting adjustment to reflect a weak online ad business led to its first quarterly loss in its 26 years as a public company. The company had a loss of 6 cents a share, compared with earnings of 69 cents a share a year ago. Adjusted earnings beat expectations, and the stock rose.

Verizon Communications Inc. says net income rose 13 percent in the second quarter as its wireless arm pulled in record profits. But its traditional, wired phone business was weaker. Like other phone companies, Verizon is losing landlines, but has been compensating to some extent by signing up broadband customers. In the second quarter, that trend faltered, as it gained just 2,000 broadband customers ? the worst result in four years.

? July 24: Apple Inc. reveals that its growth slowed in the most recent quarter. In both revenue and net income, the company posted the smallest increases in years and failed to meet analyst expectations. It wasn't so much the volume of sales, but Apple's average selling prices declined.

At AT&T Inc., meanwhile, declining smartphone sales contributed to the best profitability ever in its wireless arm as it saved on phone subsidies. AT&T says it activated fewer smartphones in the quarter, much of it because subscribers are holding to their phones longer. That's good news for the company because it doesn't have to shell out as much in subsidies to sell the phones to customers for $99 or $199.

Netflix Inc. reports a 91 percent reduction in second-quarter earnings amid a slowdown in subscriber growth. Netflix Inc. added 1.1 million worldwide subscribers to its streaming service ? in line with management predictions, but below what analysts had hoped for.

? July 25: Online game maker Zynga Inc. reports a loss in the second quarter, with adjusted earnings and revenue below Wall Street's already low expectations. Zynga also lowers its outlook for the year, citing game delays, reduced expectations for "Draw Something" and what it called a "more challenging environment on the Facebook Web platform." Changes Facebook made to its website can make older games such as "FarmVille" more difficult to discover.

? July 26: Facebook Inc.'s first earnings report as a public company had solid numbers, but in the end it landed with a thud ? much like its rocky initial public offering two months earlier. Facebook reported stronger-than-expected revenue and a gain in user numbers, but investors weren't impressed. After a brief spike, its stock fell.

Sprint Nextel Corp., the country's third-largest wireless carrier, reports a wider loss for the second quarter as wrote down the value of its moribund Nextel network. However, Sprint was successful in persuading smartphone subscribers to pay up for "unlimited data" service, and its service revenue zoomed, beating estimates.

Online retailer Amazon.com Inc. reports earnings that matched Wall Street's meager expectations, but its revenue gains and outlook for the current quarter fell short of forecasts.

? July 27: Samsung Electronics Co. reports another record-high quarterly profit as customers flocked to Galaxy smartphones. Samsung benefited from runaway demand for its Android-powered smartphones as rivals including Apple Inc. had yet to release new models. Robust sales of smartphones helped offset a slowdown in other consumer electronics businesses such as televisions.

? Aug. 1: Comcast Corp. says strong results from cable operations overcame weak returns from the box-office flop "Battleship" at its Universal Pictures studio. Net income and revenue increased. In cable, average monthly fees were up 8 percent from last year to $148.57, helped by customers upgrading to faster broadband speeds and getting more premium channels. Overall, cable revenue grew 6 percent, demonstrating that Comcast continues to do better than smaller cable companies.

? Aug. 2: LinkedIn Corp. says net income fell as it spent more money to grow its business. But the professional networking site saw revenue grow faster than expected and raised its forecast for the year.

Sony Corp. says its loss worsened in the April-June quarter and it lowered earnings forecast for the fiscal year through March as it battles a strong yen and declining sales of liquid crystal display TVs and video game machines. Sales increased 1.4 percent, helped by cameras, professional broadcasting products and mobile phones.

? Wednesday: Hewlett-Packard Co. says it will take a massive charge against its earnings for the quarter through July, leading to a record loss of nearly $9 billion. The charge is the result of a writedown of the value of its services business, reflecting that the company overpaid for its purchase of Electronic Data Systems in 2008.

    Coming up:

    ? Aug. 13: Groupon Inc.

? Aug. 15: Cisco Systems Inc.

    ? Aug. 21: Dell Inc.

    ? Aug. 22: Hewlett-Packard Co.

? Sept. 27: Research in Motion Ltd.

First off I'm sorry thing is kinda long, but I am oh so very confused. My husband of 3 1/2 yrs filed for divorce after a year of saying he wanted one, his reason being he just doesn't want to be married anymore and this marriage is the reason for all of his unhappiness (red flags right there). I've spent the past year really working on myself and this relationship. I?ve dealt with mild depression on and off over the 7yrs we?ve been together, but the past 2 yrs I?ve really gotten myself in a good place. He has mentioned recently that be believes he has PTSD (he was active duty military for 8 yrs) and has said he has no feelings for anyone or anything anymore. In the past I?ve wondered whether he might be dealing with depression or something just from seeing my personal exp dealing with it.

During this whole year of him saying he wanted a divorce he has times where he seems completely happy and into the relationship and then suddenly he'll bring up divorce again. We have a decent sex life most of the time, and he's still acts considerate and thinks of things like leaving the porch light on when I work late. After he told me Wednesday afternoon that he filed, later on that evening he asked if I was fixing dinner because if so he would stay home and eat with me even though his parents who live next door(another problem altogether) invited him only over. Heck we still shower together and sleep in the same bed. I don?t know what to think anymore?. Does this sound like someone who really wants a divorce? Or is this something like PTSD or depression trying to take over?

Republicans slam Senator Reid over Romney tax claim

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Top Republicans on Sunday accused Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of lying by passing along an anonymous claim that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney hasn't paid taxes for 10 years.

Republican Party chairman Reince Priebus called Reid a "dirty liar." Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said, "I think he's lying about his statement of knowing something about Romney" and he contended Reid was "making things up to divert the campaign away from the real issues."

Reid's spokesman, Adam Jentleson, contended that Republicans were trying to cover up for Romney and the aide repeated the Nevada senator's claims that the source about Romney's taxes is "credible." Other Democrats said Romney could clear up any confusion about his taxes by disclosing them to the public, and the issue was a main talking point on the Sunday news shows.

Reid said last week he had learned of the claim about Romney's taxes from an investor in Romney's former firm, Bain Capital. But the lawmaker hasn't offered any evidence to back it up and even has said he's not sure it's true.

Romney, who has disclosed that he's worth as much as $250 million, has said Reid's claim isn't true and that he's paid "a lot of taxes."

Romney's 2010 federal tax return shows he paid 13.9 percent tax on income of $21.6 million. Most of Romney's income came from investment gains, which are taxed at a lower rate than earned income.

The candidate has refused to release more than one year of personal tax returns, despite calls from Democrats and some Republicans to do so, saying his critics would distort the information and use it against him. He has promised to release a second year of returns.

Democrats have tried to make Romney's personal wealth and how he's managed it a key issue in the presidential contest. The former Massachusetts governor, who would be among the richest presidents ever elected, is aggressively competing with President Barack Obama for the support of middle-class voters.

Democrats pressed Romney to providing more tax information.

"He could clear it up just like that, lickety-split, by releasing his tax returns, which every major candidate for president of the United States has done except for Mitt Romney," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, who heads the Democratic National Committee.

Jentleson, Reid's spokesman, said in an email that "it's clear Mitt Romney is hiding something, and the only way for him to clear this up is to be straight with the American people and release his tax returns."

Graham appeared on CNN's "State of the Union," while Priebus and Wasserman Schultz were on "This Week" on ABC.
