Egypt's 31-year emergency law ends

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's notorious emergency law expired Thursday, ending 31 years of broad powers to detain and arrest for a police force accused of severely abusing its far-reaching authority.

Since former President Anwar Sadat's 1981 assassination, the security forces were empowered to detain and arrest people without charge, keep them locked up despite court releases and extract confessions under torture. Abuses almost always went unpunished. And at one point under the ousted regime of Hosni Mubarak, human rights groups said there were more than 10,000 people in detention ? many of them disappearing in Egyptian prisons.

"This is huge," said Hossam Bahgat, a human rights activist who had campaigned for years to lift the hated law. "What is really crucial is the message. The security forces operated under a culture that told them they were constantly above the law. Now they need to abide by the existing legislation and they won't enjoy any extralegal powers."

Last year's popular uprising that drove Mubarak from power was partially fueled by anger over police abuses of power and protesters vented against the symbols of the security agencies. The lifting of the law was a key demand by the pro-democracy youth groups that engineered the uprising 15 months ago.

The military rulers who took charge after Mubarak indicated they have no intention to renew the law. They said they will continue to be in charge of the country's security until an elected civilian authority takes over. The military has said it will hand over power to a democratically elected president by the end of June. A runoff between the two top presidential candidates slated for June 16-17 is the final phase of the transition to democratic rule.

U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner welcomed the end of the emergency law, saying it was a step "in the right direction."

"It is something that we have repeatedly encouraged them to do and it is certainly in keeping with the timeline that the (military) has set out for this democratic transition so it will be another step in that direction," he told reporters in Washington.

The emergency law was a defining and much-resented feature of Mubarak's authoritarian, 29-year regime. It was almost automatically renewed every few years; the last time in May 2010. The law had also been used by Mubarak's predecessors, and was first enacted in 1958. It remained in effect since 1967 and was briefly lifted for 18 months before Sadat's assassination.

It instituted a culture of abuse by the police force, giving it widespread powers to arrest criminals and political opponents. It was basically the main tool for successive Egyptian regimes to perpetuate a police state, spreading a culture of fear of authorities and rendering any political opposition almost immediately a threat to national security.

Mubarak's regime justified the continued use of the law to crack down on terrorism, drug trafficking and to impose speedy justice on activities deemed threats to national security. But human rights groups and activists said it gave security agencies extensive powers to detain, try without defendant rights, and crack down on opponents or menace citizens to entrench a culture of fear.

Under military rule of the past 15 months, a constitutional declaration sponsored by the military and drafted by legal experts put restrictions on renewing the emergency law, requiring that parliament would have to approve any renewal and a public referendum would also be needed.

"No one would dare demand the extension of the law," said Mahmoud Ghozlan, spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood who had spent years in jail following arrests under the provisions of the emergency law. "I think we are at the outset of a new era."

Days into the uprising, the police force all but disappeared from the streets, leaving a massive security vacuum that sent crime soaring. Since, there have been repeated and persistent calls to reform the police force but they have not really gotten off the ground.

Since Mubarak's ouster, human rights groups have blamed the military for its own set of human rights violations through its use of military tribunals for civilians and detention of activists. More than 11,000 civilians have been referred to military tribunals since February last year and there have been various allegations of torture in detention by security as well as military troops.

Under the emergency law, which was last renewed in May 2010, the government could imprison anyone for any period of time for no specific reason. The detainees would stay in prison without trials for extended period, and even court orders releasing them can be ignored by security agencies who would take them back in again.

Mubarak's security agencies targeted opponents, particularly Brotherhood members, cracking down on their meetings, finances and often in times of elections with recourse to emergency law provisions.

In two recent incidents, police arrested two men for drinking beer, although nothing in the law criminalizing that. After local prosecutors released them, the police detained them again under the provisions of the emergency law, apparently because they considered the two men a menace.

The incidents were recorded in a joint report issued by New York-based Human Rights Watch and Geneva-based AlKarama, a regional rights center issued Wednesday.

"This is an end of exceptional measures that provided cover to human rights abuses such as torture and enforced disappeared," said Heba Morayef, a researcher with Human Rights Watch. "It is the symbolism attached to it" as one of the main tools of oppression under Mubarak's rule, she said.

There are currently nearly 200 people detained under the emergency law. The two rights groups called for their release or referral to regular prosecutor for charges.

The legacy of the emergency law still lingers. According to the law, defendants can be referred to special courts ? State Security emergency courts ? where they have no right to appeal. Human Rights Watch and AlKarama appealed to the parliament to end the use of these courts, which have been deemed unconstitutional by lawyers with the expiration of the law.

Six new cases have been referred to these courts under military rule since last year; while eight others are still in courts from before.

Human Rights Watch deputy Middle East director Joe Stork urged the parliament to investigate human rights violations that flourished because of the law.

"The Egyptian parliament should make sure that this state of emergency, a hallmark of Hosni Mubarak's abusive police state, has no future," Stork said.

Cricket swing 'not from humidity'

The phenomenon of swing bowling, in which a cricket ball veers sideways during flight, is not influenced by humidity, researchers say.

Cricketers and sport scientists alike have long hypothesised that high humidity may increase the swing effect.

But precise 3-D studies of cricket balls under varying humidity showed no effect on the balls' shapes.

A report due in Procedia Engineering instead suggests that cloud cover increases swing by stilling the air.

Much like the path of a "curve ball" in baseball or a looping corner kick in football, the swing effect comes from setting up different kinds of air flow on opposite sides of the ball - smooth or "laminar" flow on one side and chaotic "turbulent" flow on the other.

But why the effect is more noticeable during some matches, and even some days in the same match, has had researchers and players stumped.

"Lots of scientists have always tried to discuss this idea around cricket ball swing and the effect of atmospheric conditions, and people talk about humid days being really important," said study co-author David James of Sheffield Hallam University's Centre for Sport Engineering Research.

"The leading hypothesis as to why cricket balls swing was around the fact that the seam on the cricket ball will swell on a humid day, becoming more pronounced, and that might lead to more swing," he told BBC News.

Dr James and his colleagues John Hart at Sheffield and Danielle MacDonald at AUT University in New Zealand made use of the centre's "climate chamber", in which atmopheric conditions can be tightly controlled.

They used a 3-D laser scanner to monitor differently conditioned balls reacted under varying humidity, but found humidity had no detectable effect on the ball's geometry.

Instead, they have pitched in another idea: that bright sunshine - or the lack of it - is to blame for variation in swing.

"When the ground heats, it makes convection currents which make the air rise off the cricket pitch - that creates turbulence in the air on a sunny day," Dr James explained.

"On a cloudy day you get stiller air, because you don't get these convection currents coming off the ground."

Stiller air does less to affect the imbalance of smooth and chaotic flow on either side of the ball that leads to swing, so cloud cover could indirectly be the culprit.

Dr James concedes that the team's hypothesis must now be put to a test under controlled conditions, but they are convinced that humidity is not the variable that should put batters on the back foot.

"We fairly rigorously went through every possible thing around humidity and debunked it," he said.

It wasn't long ago that we heard about the "lock-up" woes D4 and D800 owners were experiencing on their shiny new shooters, but luckily for them, Nikon just outed a fix to take care of those issues. Aside from solving the aforementioned annoyance, the firmware update (B:1.01) also mends a problem allowing RAW files to be network-transferred while in JPEG-only mode, as well as a bug causing bits like aperture and exposure compensation to change unexpectedly when using certain custom settings. You can grab the updates now via the source links below, and be sure to let us know how it all turned out in the end.

How Mitt Romney?s iPhone app typo explains the Internet

To be fair to Mitt Romney, his copywriters and his proofreaders ? all of whom allowed a typo spelling ?America? as ?Amercia? into Romney?s new iPhone app ? ?America? is kind of a weird word.

Yes, yes, I know about Amerigo Vespucci. But we pretty much never talk about him, and his first name, anyway, was Amerigo. No one really understands why the word that Wikipedia calls ?the feminized, latin version of his first name? is on the door to the home of the brave.

To be even more sumptuously fair to Mitt Romney, whose team as of this writing is still having trouble righting the entirely pleasing wrong word they bestowed on the world on Tuesday, typos make the world go round. The online world, anyway.

In the language of the digital elite ? meaning, not people with only 117 Facebook friends ? typos like ?teh? and ?pwn? are elegant strings, loaded with irony and history, that communicate volumes of cultural content. I can?t even explain all that content to you here. They can?t explain it. It?s elite.

The best way to get a sense of the 1337 typo humor is to correct someone on Twitter who uses ?teh? for ?the.? You?ll be laughed off the Internet.

And then to coin one of those blockbuster typos: who could even dream that big? Visit 4chan sometime and try to start a meme like ?meem? or go viral with ?vrial? ? you?ll get hacked out of town. They?ll pwn you.

?Amercia? is still getting auto-corrected on iPhones, and it is not yet a full-fledged Wikipedia entry. But Twitter?s running with it. Given its portability, its uniqueness on Google, and the number of short-form gags it continues to spawn, Amercia has the making of a nifty, hardy little meme. The Romney campaign shouldn?t panic about Amercia. They should, stealthily, pwn it. (Sorry ? I won?t stop with that one.)

The campaign should create a WIkipedia entry this minute (are you listening @ZacMoffatt, Romney digital director who doesn?t return my calls?), and stay on top of it, showing the campaign has a sense of humor and deep tendrils in the social networks. It should hint ? with links ? at a passing understanding of leetspeak. It should rib Apple?s App Store for being slow to take proofreading changes. And it should maybe hint that Amercia is a country of ? whatever, mercy, Mitt Romney, hijinks. Twitter fun.

Amerigo Vespucci?s name was contorted to girly America and slapped on a land mass. He got way more credit than he deserved for our one nation under God. Americans owe our brand to a 16th century typo. Maybe Romney can point that out, too.

PFT: Roethlisberger sees progress in offense

Carolina Panthers Training CampGetty Images

Last week, Panthers linebacker Jon Beason took issue with comments from 49ers quarterback Alex Smith regarding the big stats from 2011 generated by Carolina quarterback Cam Newton.

On Tuesday, Beason had more to say during an appearance on SiriusXM?s Mad Dog Radio.

By way of background, here?s what Smith originally said:? ?I could absolutely care less on yards per game.? I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you?re losing games in the second half, guess what, you?re like the Carolina Panthers and you?re going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games.? That?s great.? You?re not winning, though.?

Here?s what Beason said on Tuesday:? ?When you read the comments it seemed like he used the Carolina Panthers as a way to take the pressure off himself, in the meantime taking a shot at us.? Based on what he said I think couldn?t be any further from the truth, actually what happened this season.?

There?s more.? ?I think [Cam Newton] is way ahead of Alex was as a former first-round pick,? Beason told Evan Cohen and Steve Phillips.? ?You know, going into a situation where you?re on the worst team in football, or in an offense that finished 32nd in scoring last year, to an offense that finished fifth, I think you should at least take your hat off to him and understand the situation and the type of pressure that Cam Newton was under this year.?

The bottom line is that, while the 49ers went to the NFC title game, the Panthers offense generated big passing numbers last year, and the 49ers didn?t.

?I think 19 touchdown passes is, you know, not going to get you in a Super Bowl,? Beason said.? ?I think five interceptions is an amazing stat, but it is just like in basketball, if you don?t shoot you can?t score.? So based on what they were able to do and the parts around him, the coach, the defense, I think they did a great job.? You win 13 games you?re the best in the league.? I think that?s the right formula for them but that wouldn?t have been the right formula for us.? So do you take your hat off to Alex Smith?? Yes.? Should he feel good about himself?? Yes.? Should he get upset about having to answer questions about him finishing 29th in the league in yards per game?? That?s a stat.? If you don?t like it maybe fix it but, like I said, in the meantime don?t take shots at other people or other players because you are tired of dealing with that question.?

Beason?s ultimate point is valid.? In defending his relatively bad stats, there?s no reason to knock down those who had better stats.? Newton had the best rookie season of any quarterback to ever play the game.? Regardless of the team?s won-loss record, that?s a fact.

For 49ers fans, it could actually be a good sign that Smith is starting to display a bit of a chip on his shoulder.? And he definitely should have one after the team openly flirted with Peyton Manning before giving Smith yet another chance to prove that he can finally become the guy the organization thought he would be when making him the first overall pick in 2005.

Whether that shoulder-chip generates a better stat line for Smith will be one of the more relevant questions of the 2012 season.

Guide to Online Dating opensocialdirectory.org

Posted on May 28, 2012 under Meet People Online | 2 Comments

Are you one of the folks that are still a bit hesitant when it comes to online dating? Well stop worrying and start up your laptop!

Internet dating has never been more accepted or popular in terms of meeting new singles. All you need is the right approach, a good profile, and some proven tips to help you succeed.

Site

* Once upon a time paid Internet dating sites were considered to have the ?best? selection of people. Truth is, today any number of sites will work just fine. It all depends on your preference and ultimate goals. For more details visit to www.coachingonnet.com

There are sites geared toward casual acquaintances, serious relationships, and everything in between. Many singles today register with at least one or two sites to achieve the best possible odds of meeting different people. Peruse some of the top online dating sites to see which offer the most for you.

Approach

* Let?s face it; some singles are just looking for the thrill of meeting new people, while others are looking for a quality relationship. Determine what you want to accomplish from your online dating experience and let your approach follow. For example, if you?d like to meet as many people as you can, be proactive in sending emails and setting up first dates. Make an objective to physically meet folks rather than just getting to know them via email. If you?re searching for an eventual mate, you might want to take things slower and correspond a bit before you actually set eyes on your online match. If you are pressed for time in a busy schedule, arrange for one date a week, rather than several informal coffee dates. Choosing the right pacing and approach for your dates will help you enjoy your overall Internet dating experience.

Photo

* Imagine a place where you have access to thousands of potential singles right before your eyes. All you have to do is point your finger to the one you want to meet. Well that, in a sense, is Internet dating. But instead of pointing your finger, you click a mouse on the one that most interests you. And if you have hundreds of pictures flying before your eyes, are you going to stop and read the profile with a photo that is out of focus, has hair and outfit blended into the background, with their arm around a cropped out individual (probably an ex)? Doubt it. Take time to post the best possible photo you can.

Headline

* Every inch of your online profile is valuable real estate. Think of your headline as the caption to your online billboard. With that said, do you really want ?Looking to meet someone nice? or ?Are there any decent men left?? as the thing you want someone whizzing by to see? With Internet dating, singles scan through profiles quickly for the ones that catch their eye. So why waste space with a poor headline? Use it instead to write something catchy and unique that will instantly give a potential date an idea of your personality.

Profile

* Ever reach for a book because the cover looks interesting, only to put it back as soon as you start reading? The same can happen with your profile if a potential date likes your headline and photo but begins to yawn once they read what you have to say for yourself. You don?t need to be a professional writer, although some skills with the written word certainly don?t hurt. Imagine that you?re introducing yourself to a potential friend, and proceed in a tone that is personable yet playful. If you need help, don?t be afraid to consult a professional profile consultant.

Safety

* Dating via any method (online or otherwise) needs to be approached in an intelligent manner. Be smart with any personal information. Remember that even if you emailed someone for a while, you still haven?t met him or her yet. Wait until you are absolutely comfortable before giving out phone numbers, last names, or email addresses. Meet only in a public place until you know your match is of the sane and reasonable variety. To know more logon to www.100computertips.com .If necessary, make use of the blocking feature or double blind email system some online dating sites offer. Just like any other time you?d meet a stranger, let your instincts be your guide when it comes to revealing parts of your life.

Attitude

* Having the right outlook on relationships is important, but that goes double for Internet dating. Singles on the Internet move quickly, scanning profiles and photos and sending winks and emails at a much higher speed than if they were merely meeting people in person. So show your best possible impression right from the start. Dump the grumpy attitude because you are busy at work or have been burned by love in the past. Everyone has problems, but Internet daters especially have no patience for the downers of this world. There are simply too many great people out there to meet!

Golden Gate Bridge marks 75 years since opening against steep odds

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The Golden Gate Bridge was a larger than life engineering project undertaken against dangerous odds and it opened 75 years ago on Sunday against vehement protest, at the cost of 11 lives.

One of the most astonishing and admired man-made wonders of the world, gracing millions of postcards, featured in countless films, the bridge was not at first welcomed with open arms.

Ferry operators and environmentalists opposed it, and many engineers doubted such a daring leap over a treacherous Pacific Ocean strait could be built. The military worried a collapsed Golden Gate span could block access to the Bay in war time.

Some San Franciscans even fought against it because they thought a bridge might ruin the view, according to historians.

Kevin Starr, author of "Golden Gate: The Life and Times of America's Greatest Bridge," said 2,000 related court cases were filed over nearly a decade.

But Starr said litigation and regulatory scrutiny largely concluded in the 1920s allowed builders to move quickly once bank funding was nailed down in 1932, in an early form of public-private cooperation.

"President Obama talks about shovel-ready projects," Starr said in a phone interview. "This was shovel ready."

The less than two decades between conception and completion means the Golden Gate compares well with the new quake-proof second span of the Bay Bridge a few miles away, he said. That $6.2 billion project is due to be done in 2013, 24 years after a deadly earthquake literally jolted the authorities into action.

Yet building the Golden Gate, at an estimated cost of $1.2 billion in current dollars, was a Herculean task. While the idea took hold in the prosperous 1920s, by the time ground was broken the Depression had left many people desperate for jobs.

"Launched midst a thousand hopes and fears; Damned by a thousand hostile sneers," was how the head engineer for the bridge, Joseph Strauss, described the bridge in a poem he wrote to mark its completion in 1937. He died less than a year later.

Even the bridge's arresting dark orange color was an accident, first used as a primer while designers decided what to paint it. The Navy had argued for black with yellow stripes, to ensure it could be seen in a strait hostile to mariners, with dense fog, heavy winds and strong ocean swells.

In the end, bridge authorities decided they liked the color - known as International Orange - and stuck with it.

FORM AND FUNCTION

Starr speculated that some early opposition from locals may have been due to the original styling, which was likened to an "upside-down rat trap", before it was altered to the sweeping suspension bridge design.

"Its elegance is derived from its structural efficiency," Paul Giroux, from the American Society of Civil Engineers, said at a panel discussion hosted by San Francisco's Commonwealth Club. "It's a perfect blend of form and function."

Construction began in 1933, 14 years after Strauss was first approached. Bank of America archivist David Mendoza said it took a personal appeal from Strauss to Amadeo Giannini, founder of the then-San Francisco-based bank, to secure funding.

"Strauss was worried it might not get built," Mendoza said of that fateful meeting, now commemorated on a plaque.

After opening on May 27, 1937, thousands of people walked, roller-skated and stilt-walked across. Cars came the next day.

Celebrations for the 50th anniversary became infamous for the frightful swaying of the bridge under the weight of 300,000 people. This time round, the bridge will be closed to cars and pedestrians during a fireworks show that will cap a day of festivities along the bay waterfront on Sunday.

Beyond the revelry and Tributes, the bridge's dark side will lurk in the background: An estimated 1,400 people have jumped off the bridge to end their own lives, a grim reality brought to the attention of many people with a 2006 documentary film, "The Bridge," by Eric Steel. The filmmaker secretly captured more than 20 suicides from the bridge.

"Four seconds drop and you're done," Starr said. "A few people have survived, but not many."

The Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District is now studying the costs and feasibility of draping nets along it to catch any jumpers, a twist on the nets deployed during construction, which saved the lives of 22 workers.

Of the 11 men killed from falls during construction, ten were killed after a net failed under stress from a fallen scaffold when the bridge was near completion.

Safety was a serious concern during construction, with hard hats widely used for the first time and workers forced to drink sauerkraut juice if they arrived at work hung over, Starr said.

Living memory is limited. The San Francisco Chronicle reported the last two known surviving builders, Jack Balestreri and Edward Ashoff, died in April, within a week of each other.

(AP) ? Russia's foreign minister said Monday that both sides in the Syrian conflict "had a hand" in the deaths of more than 100 civilians in the town of Houla and called for a full investigation.

The comments by Sergey Lavrov came a day after the U.N. Security Council, which includes Russia, blamed the Syrian government for attacking residential areas in the central town of Houla, but avoided saying who was responsible for the massacre of more than 100 men, women and children.

"Both sides have obviously had a hand in the deaths of innocent people, including several dozen women and children. This area is controlled by the rebels, but it is also surrounded by the governmental troops," Lavrov said after talks with visiting British Foreign Secretary William Hague.

Lavrov said there was no doubt that government forces had used artillery and tanks to shell Houla, or that many of the bodies were found with wounds indicating they had been hit at close range or tortured.

"The guilt has to be determined objectively," Lavrov said. "No one is saying that the government is not guilty, and no one is saying that the armed militants are not guilty."

Lavrov and Hague both called for greater efforts to implement a peace plan put forward by special envoy Kofi Annan, which calls on both sides respect a cease-fire.

"It's right, as Sergey Lavrov has just done, to call on all parties to cease violence, and we are not arguing that all violence in Syria is the responsibility of the Assad regime, although it has the primary responsibility for such violence," Hague said.

Lavrov added that "we don't support the Syrian government, we support Kofi Annan's plan."

He called for all in the international community to work together, saying it was not clear from talks with opposition members that they were getting the message that the Annan plan was supported by all.

Break in Patz brings hope, tears to other families

After 33 years, someone has confessed to killing 6-year-old Etan Patz. And people immediately start speaking of "closure."

Patty Wetterling hates the word.

Since 1989, she and her husband have writhed in the same hell as Stan and Julie Patz. Whatever path they might have been on, it was irrevocably altered that October evening when a masked man walked away with their 11-year-old boy, Jacob.

"Once you're a victim of a crime like this, your life takes a very different direction," the St. Joseph, Minn., woman says. "It doesn't really close anything, because everything just became different from that point on. But it does provide answers."

Thanks to the wonders of modern computer graphics, these parents can watch their children "age" ? digitally, at least. But no one can write a program capable of generating the milestones ? high school graduation, college, marriage, parenthood ? that come along with growing up.

Some, like Mike and Maddi Misheloff of Dublin, Calif., exist in a kind of suspended animation, unwilling to move or even redecorate the lost one's bedroom.

Many, like the Patzes, live with the "what ifs." What if they hadn't given in to his "please," hadn't let him make his first solo walk to the school bus stop that May day in 1979?

A few suffer under a cloud of suspicion themselves ? like Judy Moore of Jackson, Ky., whose 6-year-old son, Kelly, disappeared in 1982 while playing in the snow.

Back when Etan vanished, authorities put the children's faces on milk cartons. Today, their names and images flash across the Internet and digital highway signs.

It is a horrifying truth that the best some families can hope for is that their child is being held against their will, says activist John Walsh.

Before her rescue in 2009, Jaycee Dugard was repeatedly raped and gave birth to two daughters during 18 years of captivity at the hands of a known sex offender in California. Still, her mother could eventually put her arms around her again, says Walsh, host of television's "America's Most Wanted."

"Against all hope and reality, every now and then a child comes back alive," says Walsh, whose 6-year-old son, Adam, was abducted from a Florida department store in July 1981 and murdered. "So that's why these people keep their rooms and their phone numbers, because it's part of the staying mentally sane. It's part of the being able to cope with the worst possible thing that could ever happen to you ? your beautiful, loving child disappears."

Through his show, Walsh has helped capture more than 1,200 criminals and bring home about 60 missing children. He knows the Patzes and has shared their heartache each time a lead evaporated, and one "breakthrough" after another ended in disappointment.

"My wife has a wonderful saying," says Walsh. "It's like a mortal wound that you don't die from. It heals over and it has a scab on it. And events like that crack it open, and it bleeds. It'll never die."

Across America, as the Patzes wait to see if they will at last get justice for Etan, parents' hearts are bleeding anew.

With their other two children grown and out on their own, the Misheloffs' house is a bit too big for them. But they wouldn't dream of moving while there is still a chance that Ilene might return.

"She has to come back to HER house," her father says.

"This is her home," his wife agrees. "We have to be here for her."

They have left their daughter's room just as it was on Jan. 30, 1989 ? the day she vanished. Not as a shrine, Maddi Misheloff says, but simply because, "It's her room.

"And on the daily hope that we're getting her back," she says.

Ilene was 13 when she disappeared on her way home from Wells Middle School to change into her figure-skating clothes. She had recently competed in her first regional meet, and her family had gotten permission for her to leave while everyone else was in last period.

That morning, Ilene was brushing her hair in the bathroom as Maddi Misheloff walked by on her way out the door to her office job at a physical therapy and medical supply company. The two exchanged a quick "I love you."

Mike Misheloff, an engineer at a Silicon Valley semiconductor company, was driving Ilene and her twin brother, Brian, the mile or so to school. They were running late, and the kids bolted from the car as soon as their father pulled up at the school.

Ilene, a pretty girl with braces and curly brown hair, was wearing a charcoal gray pullover polo sweater, a horizontally striped pink and charcoal skirt, and black, low-top Keds sneakers. She was carrying a dark-blue backpack.

After school, she usually had a snack while she waited for her coach to come pick her up. But she never got home that day.

The couple have been in contact with police off and on since Ilene's disappearance. But they haven't heard anything since the beginning of the year, when the lead investigator was promoted and a new detective took his place.

Both parents have been following the Patz case. But a more recent event brought the emotions flooding back.

In the last few days, a Central Valley man was arrested in the disappearance of a 15-year-old girl. Although no body has been found, police say there is enough evidence to suspect a homicide, Mike Misheloff says.

"We want to know where our child is," his wife says. "Every day without her is torture, and we want her back."

___

When Judy Moore heard that the Patzes second-guess their decision to let Etan walk to the bus stop alone that day, she wept.

"You're reading my mind," she says, the tears coming afresh. "It's pitiful."

Moore, 55, had lost one prematurely born baby at 5 weeks. A judge had given custody of her two older children to her parents because her epilepsy made it difficult for her to care for them, she says.

Kelly, her baby, was all she had left.

Moore and Kelly's father, Bobby Hollan, were divorced. On Feb. 12, 1982, mother and her son were living with Moore's boyfriend in a rented house halfway up Pine Tree Hollow, near the town of Hindman in the eastern Kentucky mountains.

There was a dusting of snow on the ground. Kelly ? a blue-eyed boy with a scar on his upper lip from an operation to repair a birth defect ? had the day off from kindergarten and was begging to go outside and play.

After about two hours, Moore says, she relented. He pulled on his brown boots and the blue wind breaker with the torn zipper and headed for the door.

"He hugged me and said, 'Mom, I love you,'" she says, her voice breaking.

It was around 11:30 a.m.

She sat on the bed and watched him out the window for a while. A couple of hours later, a neighbor yelled down to say that Moore's sister was on the telephone.

When she came back home from the call, she says, Kelly was gone.

Moore assumed he was up the road at his friend Gordon's house, where they watched "The Dukes of Hazzard" together. She went to the kitchen to fix dinner ? soup beans and cornbread.

When Kelly didn't come home for supper, she went up and down the hollow looking for him. It started snowing again.

Police brought out a cadaver dog. No trace was ever found.

Moore says she stopped contacting the police years ago.

"They keep trying to get me to confess to murder," she says incredulously. "I understand that there's mothers out there that do things like this. It makes me sick. I mean, how a mother can do something like that to their own flesh and blood, I'll never understand it."

She says her other two children believe the rumors. They are estranged.

She believes Kelly is still alive. If not, she takes comfort in the thought that he is "one of God's little angels."

"I shouldn't have let him go out in the yard and play that day," she says through her tears. "But I did. It's just stuff that we do, and we can't take it back. I wish we could, but we can't."

___

The outgoing message on the Wetterlings' answering machine says it all.

"Hope is an amazing force that we all need in our lives EVERY day," Patty Wetterling's voice declares.

The evening of Oct. 22, 1989, she and her chiropractor husband, Jerry, were going out to visit with friends. They asked Jacob, 11, to baby-sit his two younger siblings ? Trevor, 10, and Carmen, 8.

They called home to give Jacob the phone number where they were, in case of an emergency. Not long afterward, the children called to say they were bored, and to ask permission to ride their bikes to the video store ? about a mile away.

"No," their mother said instinctively. "Find something to do at home."

Trevor asked to speak to their dad. He promised they would take a flashlight; Jake would wear the father's reflective jogging vest.

The parents conferred, then acquiesced. When Jacob called back around 8:30 to say that Carmen didn't want to come, the Wetterlings agreed with his solution to have the 13-year-old neighbor girl sit with her until they got back with the movie.

"It should have been OK," she says.

The brothers and a friend made it to the store, where they chose their movie ? Leslie Nielsen's cop comedy, "The Naked Gun" ? and bought some candy. They were about halfway home when, the other two boys told authorities, a masked gunman emerged from a driveway.

He ordered them to throw their bikes into a ditch and lie down. After asking each boy his age, he told Trevor and the friend to run toward the nearby woods and not look back.

But after a short distance, they did turn around ? just in time to see the man leading Jacob away by the elbow.

There have been many leads over the years.

"We have had leads in the last two weeks," Wetterling says.

Wetterling was a stay-at-home mom when Jake vanished. Today, she is director of sexual violence prevention for the Minnesota Department of Health.

She takes heart in the fact that a relative turned in the man now charged with murdering Etan.

"We all need answers," she says of her family, the Patzes and all the others. "We believe somebody else knows something ... They've also carried an awful heavy load, and it's time to come forward."

But that doesn't mean she has given up on finding Jacob alive.

"I'm not just looking for a murderer to come forward; I'm looking for information," she says. "I pray for that."

Michigan State Football: All-Time 10 Best Quarterbacks

Now that we have finished up all of the ?Top 10? for each position on the hardwood, it is now time that we focus are attention to the gridiron. First up we have everyone?s favorite position, quarterback. Michigan State is not known for producing great quarterbacks, but there have been enough quarterbacks that have made an impact that we were able to put together a decent list. So, for all you football and MSU fans out there, check out the list of the best quarterbacks in the history of MSU football below:

?

10. Dan Enos (1987-1990)

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Enos, now the head coach at Central Michigan University, is ranked fourth all-time in completion percentage in MSU history, completing 62.1 percent in his two years as a starting quarterback. Also, Enos ranks 12th in passing yards with 3,837, and 11th in career yards with 4,301.

9. Ed Smith (1976-1978)

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

In 1978, Smith led the Spartans to a share of the Big Ten Championship. During this season Smith threw for 2,226 yards, 20 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. Smith ranks fifth in passing touchdowns in MSU history with 43, and he ranks sixth in passing yards in MSU history with 5,706 yards.

8. Dave Yarema (1982-1986)

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Dave Yarema ranks in the top 10 in many MSU passing categories such as: passing yards (fifth, 5,809 yards), passing touchdowns (fourth, 44 touchdowns), interceptions (tied for third, 33), completion percentage (seventh, 60.5 percent), and passing efficiency (eighth, 134.4). Yarema had his best season as a senior where he passed for 16 touchdowns and threw for 2,581 yards.

7. Bill Burke (1996-1999)

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

The former Michigan State southpaw was the first ever quarterback in MSU history to throw for 400 yards in a game when he did it in 1999 in a 34-31 victory against that team in Ann Arbor. Burke ranks amongst the top Spartan quarterbacks in every major category, including touchdowns, where he ranks third with 46 in his career.

6. Tony Banks (1994-1995)

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Tony Banks has had the best NFL career of all MSU quarterbacks in recent history, and honestly, that is the only reason he made this list. Usually I don?t do these lists by the athletes career outside of East Lansing, but I felt that someone had to represent MSU at the professional level, and Banks was the guy. Banks didn?t have a great career at MSU, only playing for two years, as he threw 20 touchdown in his career (10th all-time) with 21 interceptions, but Banks was the first quarterback drafted in the 1996 NFL Draft when he was selected by the St.Louis Rams in the second round. During his career in the NFL, Banks threw for over 15,000 yards and threw 77 touchdowns and 73 interceptions. He played for the Rams, Ravens, Redskins, and Texans during his 10-year career.

5. Brian Hoyer (2004-2008)

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Before there was Cousins, there was this man right here. Brian Hoyer was not exceptionally good at one area of the quarterback position, but he was good enough to get the job done. Hoyer ranks fourth in passing yards in MSU history with 6,159 yards, and he ranks seventh in career passing touchdowns with 35. He is also one of only four quarterbacks in MSU history to pass for over 4,000 yards in a season, and Hoyer had 13 career 200-yard passing games, which ranks third MSU history.

4. Jeff Smoker (2000-2003)

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

With one of the most ironic names in sports history, Jeff Smoker was apart of one of the most high-powered offenses in MSU history. Smoker was the quarterback who was lucky enough to have the services of Charles Rogers during his college stint, and he took full advantage of Mr.Roger?s talent. Smoker is second all-time in passing yards in MSU history with 8,932, and second in passing touchdowns with 61. Nobody in MSU history threw more passes than Smoker, as he threw 1,150 and completed 685. For all of you U of M fans who may have forgotten about one of the biggest plays in MSU history, completed by Smoker, I did the honor of giving you guys the link so that you can reminisce and re-live this great time in Spartan football history.

3. Drew Stanton (2002-2006)

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Drew Stanton was easily the most exciting quarterback to watch in MSU history, as he could run and throw the ball with the best of them in college football during his time at MSU. Stanton ranks in the top ten in all major quarterback categories, and has the best completion percentage in MSU history completing 64.2 percent of his passes. Also, Stanton ranks 20th in MSU history in rushing attempts with 332 carries and he racked up 1,512 yards on those carries. Stanton is the best play-maker at the quarterback position that has come through East Lansing, and even though he has not had a great NFL career, his contributions on the football field at Michigan State will never be forgotten.

2. Earl Morrall (1953-1955)

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Who? If you have never heard of Earl Morrall before reading this list don?t feel too bad because I hadn?t either until I started to do research for this article. Earl Morrall played football during the era where running the ball was like breathing, running was the game. While his numbers may not seem like ?top 10? caliber numbers, you must remember that you have to place him within his context when evaluating his play. Morrall is another on of those players that I couldn?t ignore his post-college success, and honestly, that is the reason why he is so high on this list. First, while at MSU, Morrall threw for over 2,000 yards in his career, which during the period in which he played was VERY good. Also, he is the third most efficient quarterback in MSU history with a rating of 140.5. He led the Spartans to a Rose Bowl victory in 1956 over UCLA, finishing off a 9-1 season for the Spartans. Morrall only threw 13 touchdowns in his career at MSU, with 16 interceptions, but that was enough for the 49ers to make him with the second overall pick in the 1956 NFL Draft. During his time in the NFL Morrall was a three time Super Bowl winner, two time Pro Bowl selection, he won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award in 1972, and he was named the NFL MVP is 1968. Morrall was clearly the best Spartans quarterback of all-time when you look at his whole career, and unfortunately for me, I wasn?t able to watch him play.

1. Kirk Cousins (2007-2012)

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Kirk Cousins, b.k.a Mr. Perfect, is the most productive quarterback in Michigan State history. Cousins is on top of the list on several MSU passing records. He is the leader in pass completions (723), passing yards (9,131), passing touchdowns (66), and passing efficiency (146.1). Also, no Spartan quarterback has won more games than Cousins (27), and he is tied for sixth in Big Ten history in completion percentage (64. 1 percent). While all of these stats are impressive,? Cousins most impressive stat during his tenure at Michigan State is that he has NEVER lost to that team in Ann Arbor as a starter. When you come to Michigan State that has to be one of your main objectives, and not many have shown the winning attitude quite like Cousins. Aside from football, Cousins is a class act man. He is the type of guy that you would want your kids to be like. From academics, to athletics, to the community, Cousins was one of the most productive players in MSU history on and off the field.

For obtaining and maintaining a career in the financial sector, it is also important to provide a clean credit report.

LAKE: Consumer Credit Report:? What it is

Why is your personal credit history is a factor
There are four main reasons why a bad credit history and / or a bankruptcy filing are in recruitment and Registration relevance:

  1. There is a general feeling that a bankrupt person may be more likely to participate in fraudulent activities in order to earn his living.
  2. There is a school of thought that, if a person has difficulty managing his or her money, so not that person is able to competently manage client money strikes. Many employers feel that a poor credit rating or the existence of bankruptcy proceedings is a reflection of bad character or bad judgment is. Because bankruptcy filings are publicly available that could lead to FINRA Broker Check system, companies should want to avoid setting an individual whose credit history could the reputation of the company by existing or potential customers the impression that the company has lax standards harm employment.

    FINRA?s requirements regarding bankruptcy
Each application (or transfer) with his or her registration status and / or self-regulation (SRO) has the obligation to disclose the personal insolvency has occurred within the last 10 years on the Form U4. This requirement applies even if you are currently registered or have applied insolvency, because it is your task is complete information on the Form U4 sure is up to date.

Although it is not an automatic disqualifier, a person may be denied registration if he or she has filed for bankruptcy protection in the last 10 years. You should also, to neglect to put the details of an open bankruptcy, may impose disciplinary measures ? including potentially barring you from the securities business. These include cases in which a bankruptcy procedure is the result after the initial registration and a registrant?s Form U4 is not updated.

    What?s in a Credit Report?
There are a few points on the individual credit report, employers tend to look at long and hard, including credit card balances and legal judgments.

  • credit card balance ? Employers not only look at the number of cards that has excellent future employees, but also on the average length of time it takes for individuals to meet these debts. In addition, the report is exactly what notes / debt that the would-be employees is outstanding, including the first mortgage, home equity loans, personal loans and credit lines. The idea is a sense of whether a potential employee a person who ultimately represent the company in a professional manner is received
  • court decisions -. In addition to credit cards and loans that future employers will look closely at any (negative) legal judgments that were made against the prospective employee in the last seven years (this is the time to include most credit reports). Employers are looking for high potential liabilities associated with these judgments, and any clues as to how and why the individual can these debts are incurred.

Why are judgments and legal proceedings so important? As the details of such proceedings tend to reveal the essence of a person?s character. With that in mind, most employers want to know whether a particular judgment or debt came from a small misunderstanding or serious criminal activity, so be prepared for these questions during the interview.

combat credit history questions during the interview can
In some cases, bad credit histories before a meeting where your story might be challenged to change. Here are some steps to consider:

  1. individuals should check their credit reports at least once a year. (To get your credit report, contact the three major credit bureaus. TransUnion, Experian and Equifax) In addition, looking specifically for any inaccuracies, such as debts that are known as outstanding, but has really paid off. Also for all the judgments that have met or incorrect information may appear on your ability to repay debts promptly.
  2. If you find errors, contact the credit bureau immediately and ask that errors be corrected. Make sure your respective credit bureau check on the website regarding instructions for the submission of an error. In most cases you will be asked to first contact the creditor who made the mistake, and send this information to the credit bureau. Use the comment section at the end of your credit history. Use this area to the circumstances of why the debt was in the first place and what you do, explain to improve your financial situation.

These measures will go a long way to come all the questions that otherwise may go occur during the actual interview process.

Explaining Poor credit to a prospective employer
If the details are taken of your credit report during the interview process, and you were not able to to correct problems before the interview is your next strategy to explain in detail what you do to pay your debts. More specifically, you should be prepared to evidence (in the form of receipts or receipts) that the debt, and / or that you have sufficient income or assets to satisfy the debt be repaid eventually show. In other words, to the employer that you are financially solvent and able to settle your affairs to the test.

This is a long way to prove that a person who is responsible. can also be trusted to go, should keep a hard copy of their potential employees credit reports handy, to show potential employers exactly which debts are outstanding and have been settled.
